Back From the Depths... Gilliam's DON QUIXOTE!!!

More troubles plague Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote as the film has come to a staggering halt yet again due to a "financial hiccup."

Gilliam spoke with MTV News about the film's current financial woes.

"We moved forward and then we stepped back a bit," he said. "Originally, I thought we were going to be in pre-production right now, but there's been a little hiccup. And me doing this thing with Arcade Fire is a result of this hiccup with Don Quixote. Robert Duvall is still Quixote and Ewan McGregor is still involved — all that stuff is still happening. There's just been a financial hiccup."

The film originally had Johnny Depp attached to star in the lead role, but a number of financial problems, disasters with the sets, and delays led to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor's withdrawal. The project was revived again this year by Gilliam with McGregor taking over Depp's part and Duvall cast as Don Quixote.

Yesterday, Gilliam directed a webcast for Arcade Fire's live show at Madison Square Garden.

Financing Has Collapsed for Gilliam's Don Quixote

Variety says that Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has experienced more than the "hiccup" reported in August.

"The financing collapsed about a month and a half ago," Gilliam said Saturday at the Deauville American Film Festival. "I shouldn't be here. The plan was to be shooting 'Quixote' right now."

He added that he wants to still make the movie.

"Robert Duval is Quixote, Ewan McGregor is also there, and we are looking for new financing right now," he said.

I'm pretty sure someone like Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp. would finance this...

Terry Gilliam Says His Next Project is The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

Following a festival-opening screening of the director's latest, The Zero Theorem, ComingSoon.net caught up with Terry Gilliam at the Camerimage Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland. We'll have the full interview posted shortly, but Gilliam did deliver some exciting news that we wanted to share right away. He says that his next film will finally be (he hopes) his long-awaited Miguel de Cervantes adaptation The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

"I'm going to try to do 'Don Quixote' again," Gilliam responded when asked about what he's working on now. "I think this is the seventh time. Lucky seven, maybe. We'll see if it happens. This is kind of my default position, going back to that. I actually just want to make it and get rid of it. Get it out of my life."

Production on Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote actually began in 2000 with Jean Rochefort as Quixote and Johnny Depp in the role of Sancho Panza. Unfortunately, the shoot met with dilemma after dilemma and was never finished, although the behind-the-scenes of the troubled production did end up becoming a feature-length documentary, Lost in La Mancha, in 2002.

Gilliam's new hope for the project is a welcome reversal of his thoughts in August when he told Deadline that he was just about ready to throw in the towel on the project.

"I don't know if it will be good or bad," Gilliam now says with a smile. "The dangerous thing is that a lot of people are waiting for it, so I can disappoint a lot of people maybe."

Other attempts at bringing the project to the big screen have involved Robert Duvall as Quixote and Ewan McGregor as the Sancho Panza. There's currently no word as to which cast members might be involved this time around, but Gilliam seems cautiously optimistic that he might finally bring his impossible dream to life.

Check back soon for our full interview with Gilliam and many other filmmakers from Camerimage, running now through November 23.

I feel bad for Gilliam, it seems like a lot of his films have some sort of major problem. I'm surprised Europa Corp or even Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures haven't swooped in to save him.

God bless Terry Gilliam for still trying to get this movie made. Most directors would of given up by now.

Terry Gilliam to Start Filming Don Quixote in September

Terry Gilliam told us last November that his his next project following The Zero Theorem would be his long-awaited Miguel de Cervantes adaptation The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

"I'm going to try to do 'Don Quixote' again," Gilliam said then. "I think this is the seventh time. Lucky seven, maybe. We'll see if it happens. This is kind of my default position, going back to that. I actually just want to make it and get rid of it. Get it out of my life."

Production on Gilliam's "Don Quixote" actually began in 2000 with Jean Rochefort as Quixote and Johnny Depp in the role of Sancho Panza. Unfortunately, the shoot met with dilemma after dilemma and was never finished, although the behind-the-scenes of the troubled production did end up becoming a feature-length documentary, Lost in La Mancha, in 2002.

Now, Gilliam has revealed to Empire that filming is expected to start on September 29 on the Canary Islands.

He has also brought on Spanish producer Adrin Guerra (Buried, Red Lights, Grand Piano). "He's really smart, loves movies," said Gilliam. "He's young enough to still love movies. But we've still got to cast it and get the money but other than that, that's the deal."

He added that they've rewritten the film numerous times for new casts. "We keep rewriting the script each time, too, so it's a slightly different film each time. It's the same film but the details change. Maybe it's better, it's certainly slightly smaller to fit into the new clothing we wear. Which are cheap clothes these days."

I'm hoping that old cast members like Johnny Depp and Ewan McGregor will appear in this in some capacity.
Should the lead roles have other actors?

John Hurt Is Terry Gilliam's "Don Quixote"?

By Garth Franklin Monday May 12th 2014 03:48AM
Terry Gilliam's passion project "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" may have found a new lead.
At a Q&A at the recent Derby Film Festival, actor John Hurt revealed that Terry Gilliam has asked Hurt to star as Don Quixote in the long-delayed, and previously cancelled film.
The story follows an advertising executive jumps back and forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza.
Robert Duvall was previously attached as Quixote back in 2010. Johnny Depp was cast as as the executive in the previous version that collapsed, and was willing to give it a go the second time around - ultimately having to bow out.
Gilliam hopes to start filming later this year.

Terry Gilliam’s "Don Quixote" To Film In 2015

By Garth Franklin Thursday August 7th 2014 12:53PM
Terry Gilliam's long in the works dream project, "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," looks like it is finally going forward again after the failed attempt to film it over a decade ago.
Gilliam had hope to shoot the project this Fall in the Canary Islands but didn't have the funding at that point. He now tells The Wrap that he's finally gained the necessary funding and negotiations are underway with potential cast members. As a result, filming is now slated to begin after this Christmas.
Gilliam’s original "Man Who Killed Don Quixote" script revolved around a modern-day fellow (Johnny Depp) who gets sent back in time to the 17th century, where he encounters the real Don Quixote (Jean Rochefort).
That version is no more, Gilliam says he’s revised the screenplay so it's now entirely 'contemporary' and has meta elements to the story - as it deals with 'how movies can damage people.' Specifically: "Our main character actually made a Don Quixote movie a lot earlier in his history, and the effect it had on many people wasn’t very nice. Some people go mad, some people turn to drink, some people become ****es."

Gilliam Updates "Quixote," "Defective," LAIKA

By Garth Franklin Friday September 19th 2014 05:33AM
With Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem" finally hitting U.S. cinemas tomorrow, CraveOnline caught up with the filmmaker who offered an update on several of projects. First up, he says there has been movement on his passion project "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote":
"The producer is talking to a couple agents of a couple actors at the moment, and somebody who says they've got the money for us. So these things are happening. Whether it all becomes a reality we'll find out soon."
Gilliam also says he's figured out a new approach to "The Defective Detective," a film about a detective who follows a missing girl into a fictional world:
"We've been talking about something, and I shouldn't say much of anything, but there have been some talks among my former agent [about] resurrecting it in some form or another. I think it's a great script and Richard LaGravenese and I have been talking about it for a while. It's been languishing in the bowels of Paramount Pictures, so we shall what comes of these chats we're having."
Finally, he confirmed recent rumors indicating he may be teaming with "Coraline" and "The Boxtrolls" creators LAIKA studios:
"There have been talks, yeah. We keep meaning to have a good proper telephone conversation and it doesn't seem to quite happen. Somebody involved is always unavailable. We'll see. We'll see what happens."

Jack O'Connell to Star in Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote

Source: Variety
November 5, 2014

Jack O'Connell, star of Angelina Jolie's upcoming WWII survival tale Unbroken, is set to headline Terry Gilliam's long-gestating passion project Don Quixote, which Variety reports will begin shooting in the spring for an expected May 2016 release.

Although not mentioned in the article, John Hurt is expected to portray Miguel de Cervantes' title hero in some form or another, taking over the role from previously-mooted Robert Duvall. Derbyshire native Hurt told Daily Mail last month of O'Connell's potential casting, saying, "Jack's Derbyshire born and bred, so it will be fun to work with him."

As chronicled in the documentary Lost in La Mancha, Gilliam had previously attempted to shoot The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in late 2000 with Johnny Depp playing an ad man named Toby Grosini who is somehow transported back in time and becomes Sancho Panza to a delusional Don Quixote. Filming was plagued by difficulties, including Quixote actor Jean Rochefort falling ill, and eventually abandoned. Years of legal wrangling to get the rights back left Depp unwilling to return, with actors such as Ewan McGregor considered for the lead.

Here's the synopsis for Gilliam's revised vision: A modern and satirical twist on the tale, 'Don Quixote' stars O'Connell as Toby, a jaded commercials director who travels to Spain for a shoot and comes across a gypsy who gives a copy of his student film - a lyrical re-working of the Don Quixote story set in a quaint old Spanish village. Moved by the discovery, Toby sets off on a bizarre road trip to find the little village where the student student film was shot and gets caught up in a series of catastrophies.

"Seven is my lucky number so lets break the curse and make it!," said Gilliam of his seventh attempt to make Don Quixote.

"We believe this film will capture the essence of everything audiences loved in Gilliams unforgettable masterpieces such as 'Brazil,' 'Time Bandits' and 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,'" said executive producer Gregoire Melin ("Cosmopolis"), who is handling pre-sales at AFM.

The original 2000 version's screenwriter Tony Grisoni, who wrote Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Tideland and (uncredited) The Brothers Grimm with Gilliam, is still credited with the script. Adrian Guerra (Buried, Grand Piano) at Nostromo Pictures is producing.

O'Connel recently had a supporting role in the blockbuster 300: Rise of an Empire, while Gilliam's The Zero Theorem is still playing in select theaters and on VOD.

Giliam's "Don Quixote" Delayed Again

By Garth Franklin Tuesday September 22nd 2015 11:23AM
Terry Giliam's dream project "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" can't catch a break. Fifteen years ago Gilliam had begun to film the project before it fell apart due to a variety of reasons which were chronicled in the documentary "Lost In La Mancha".
In subsequent years came reports of attempts to remount it which never seemed to really go anywhere. This past Summer things seemed to pick up steam with word that Amazon Studios had come onboard the film and that both Jack O'Connell and John Hurt were set to star.
Now The Times reports that the project has been dealt another blow due and production has reportedly been delayed for a terrible reason - 75 year-old Hurt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer over the summer.
While the prognosis for Hurt is said to be good, the film's insurers reportedly want to wait to see how things go before signing off on 'Quixote'.
Hurt was asked about this development to which he responded: "Terry seems very optimistic that we will start filming soon. Optimism is a good thing."

Goddamn! Gilliam can't catch a break. Credit to him for still fighting windmills.

It's a shame Gilliam doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
His movies are not mainstream Hollywood pieces but are always fantasy fueled & imaginative.
He is a brilliant film maker and Quixote is tailor made for him.

Oscar Jaenada has boarded Terry Gilliam’s long-delayed pic*The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, joining Adam Driver and Olga Kurylenko. It’s about an advertising exec who returns to his Spanish village, where as a student he made a film based on Don Quixote, only to get entangled in a series of catastrophes. Gilliam co-wrote the script with Tony Grisoni and Amazon Studios will distribute the film domestically. Repped by Paradigm, Grandview and Ziffren, Jaenada’s upcoming film slate includes Fox’s Snatched with Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn and Fernando Leon de Aranoa-directed biopic Escobar, opposite Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem
