'The Martian' Screenwriter Sells 'Bad Times at the El Royale' Spec Script to Fox
Details are being kept secret but sources say it is a contained thriller with either sci-fi elements or horror elements.

Not only is the logline under a veil of secrecy but the whole process of selling it was under one as well. The script went only to the top studio execs, bypassing the normal reading process. And to view the script, potential buyers had to read it off of a tablet then return it to the courier when done.

Fox, which made The Martian, moved aggressively to buy it.

Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth in Talks to Star

Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth are in talks to star in Bad Times at the El Royale, Drew Goddard’s contained thriller being made by Twentieth Century Fox. Goddard wrote the script and is directing and producing, aiming for a January 2018 start. The story is set in the 1960s at a run-down hotel near California’s Lake Tahoe named the El Royale and centers on a cast of characters whose own shady agendas will violently collide.

Good to hear that Goddard is getting back in the directors chair. Shame he got side tracked with crappy Sony spiderman projects for a while.

Yeah, I think I've seen the YVR Shoots twitter tweet a few times about production going on in Vancouver.

Hard to describe Drew Goddard’s BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE in a single tweet: mysterious, creepy, violent, darkly funny, weird, beautifully shot, twisty, an all-star cast, people in weird masks, Chris Hemsworth dancing shirtless.

In other words, it looks f**king AWESOME.

"Bad Times at the El Royale" trailer looks like The Hateful Eight set in a shabby motel. Jeff Bridges as a priest, Cynthia Ervio as gun-tooting guest, Jon Hamm at most Jon Hammiest. I dug it. #CinemaCon

BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE looks like a cross between Drew Goddard's own THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and the million Tarantino knockoffs that arrived immediately post-PULP FICTION ... but good! Killer cast, lotta of potential. #CinemaCon

As the director of The Cabin in the Woods, the Oscar-nominated writer of The Martian, and the man behind several Lost, Buffy, Daredevil and The Good Place episodes, Drew Goddard’s work is always worth keeping an eye on — and his latest project is shaping up promisingly. He’s both written and directed Bad Times at the El Royale, a thriller boasting an impressively starry cast: Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Jeff Bridges, and Nick Offerman are all involve, alonsgide Cailee Spaeny, who put in an impressive turn in Pacific Rim: Uprising earlier this year.

The enigmatic synopsis doesn’t give much away about the film, but is certainly intriguing: “Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell.” We’ve got an exclusive first look image from the film showing a bearded Chris Hemsworth caught out in the rain. He’s also forgotten to button his shirt up — careful Chris, you’ll catch your death out there!

Expect a trailer from the film in the near future, and in the meantime feel free to stare at the above picture. Bad Times at the El Royale will hit UK cinemas on October 12.

Hot damn, this looks awesome. The descriptions so far are bonkers.

I'm also really happy for Cailee Spaeny. She was excellent in Pacific Rim: Uprising so I'm glad she's getting more work.

I’m looking forward to the double feature with Hotel Artemis at the end of the year.

@blitz, yo bald head should remove the trailer cause it has cursing at the end. I'm looking out for ya'll, regardless if you wouldn't do the same for ya boy. Great trailer tho. lol

It looks like several types of movies all in one but Hemsworth is shirtless so I'm in.

No idea how "genre" this will actually be, but Hemsworth gave me a bit of a Randall Flagg vibe.

Thoroughly intrigued.

Yeah, so this looks ****ing great. I'll be there.

It's a Drew movie, it's pretty much going to be great no matter what.
