Comedy Barbie: The Movie

my 7 year old almost 8 when this hits niece is gonna LOVE this lol

I mean, you're not wrong. Oppenheimer will most likely underperform because of this, and given that this movie has a much larger target audience and number of people looking forward to it, it was only inevitable.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So Nolan and Gerwig should just combine the two and have a film called OppenBarbie.

Teaser was cute, but my god I'm not sure my eyes are going to be able to handle all that pink LOL.

And this is supposed to drop at the same time as Nolan's new movie?

Oppenheimer doesn't stand a chance. LOL

I don't get why people are making a weird competition out of this and picking sides as if you have to be pro-one or the other. They're two polar opposite movies, and I'm sure both will be great. Both could serve as a nice palette cleanser for the other haha. I think most movie fans that are even engaged with this whole meme are the mostly the type of people who will ultimately see both movies, so it's just silly.

Nolan also smartly secured a very long theatrical window for Oppie, so it doesn't have to have a monster opening weekend to be a success.

That's going to be a Venn diagram weekend at the movies. Both will be fine. Each has a different target audience but there'll be a good number of people (clearly all of us here on SHH apparently) who'll see both. See also: Ted and Magic Mike coming out on the same weekend in 2012 and each having its own space.

Exactly, and if we can get two high profile movies coming out the same weekend and both perform well...ya know, the way things used to be, that's a great sign for the health of theatrical movies. I'm rooting for the success of both. I fully expect there's a chance Barbie takes the no. 1 spot that weekend, but it doesn't mean Oppenheimer is gonna be a flop. Neither of them are gonna be MCU-level mega blockbusters that suck up all the oxygen in the room.

If anything, I'd be more concerned about Mission Impossible coming out one week prior in terms of Oppenheimer competition. But even then, all 3 are hitting a different niche and there's still time for things to change.

I mean, realistically speaking, I still think the majority of the general movie going audience will flock to this rather than Oppenheimer with much more broad appeal and of course Margot Robbie being a major draw to boot. Plus, you can find folks online who are hyped for Oppenheimer who are also interested in seeing Barbie (me included), but vice-versa I don't think, say, Margot Robbie stans are remotely interested in the former and instead find it coming across as pretentious/boring.

But that's just what I think.

You could be right, but I think the thing that people are forgetting is that the type of movie fan who is stanning for Barbie is much more likely to be active on Twitter than the type of movie fan not interested in Barbie but interested in Oppenheimer, which can distort things a bit. IE. Film Twitter is not real life.

Oppenheimer, to me, is in what I think of as the "movies that sons want to take their older dads to" category of films. It also may just appeal to a slightly older demographic in general, which shouldn't be entirely discounted in terms of there being room for both movie to thrive. And again, it's not just an opening weekend competition. I think Nolan/Universal are betting on the long haul for Oppenheimer making its money.

Barbie looks like it's going to be hilarious fun. The shot of Barbie looking out at Barbie-Land is a visual feast for the eyes with all of the details. Reminds me of Mario's mushroom kingdom in a sense; they both have a perfect "amusement park" vibe going on that really works.

I never thought a movie about Dunkirk would have broad enough appeal to open with 50 M opening and end with 500M+ worldwide, but here we are lol

There is always a big potential market for war movies, WW2 especially.

A biopic on a scientist will have much lesser appeal.

This is probably one of the greatest trailers ever made. I'm 100% sold and will be there opening weekend. It's everything I thought it might be and more!

This. Plus I doubt most of the general movie audience know who Oppenheimer was, much less care.

But we'll see how it goes.

Is there any chance this movie is a stealth musical? There seems to be a lot of dancing, at the very least.

I guess it's more or less like The Lego Movie.

That's the exact comparison I had in mind initially with this movie. Take a huge kids toy brand that feels like it probably shouldn't have a full-blown Hollywood movie made about it, inject it with hyper smart, self-aware humor and some type of subversive message. Maybe mix it with a bit of a Brady Bunch-esque shade of dark humor. Should be fun.
