I did the stupid thing and looked up reactions on YouTube and Twitter. Jesus it's a bloody war zone. I've tried to avoid all the whole sjw gamer gate crap but seriously do either side have nothing better to do. There is no middle ground you're either a sjw or a misogynist.

I just wanna watch a cartoon

Their source of power is being a victim.

This is the 2nd time the internet has called betrayal for Bruce Timm and wanting his career crash and burn. :mnm:

Wow this thread.

At least don't be ignorant and understand why people don't like the Killing Joke. Villains can do bad things, but the Joker (well, Moore) used Barbara as an object in a story that is about Jim Gordon. Women in comics have a history of being things, not characters. Sexual violence against a woman is used to develop a male character. The Killing Joke isn't an isolated story. It's firmly entrenched in what was the culture of comics until people became vocal about it.

You can agree or disagree, but dismissing criticisms is just ignorance.

You should check out the twitter feed, while what you say is absolutely true, there are people who haven't even read the book just bashing it.

The truth is that Barbara Gordon's stint as Oracle is as important as Bane breaking Batman's back, both characters learn from this experience and both move on.

Yes, I like Oracle. I don't like how the story of her paralysis was told though. The Killing Joke wasn't about Barbara becoming Oracle. It's not about Barbara at all, even though she is degraded and victimized.

I agree with you on the use of babs as nothing more than a plot device even though she was developed in to a far better character because of the story

The problem I was pointing out is simply nothing to do with criticisms but pure blindness in points, there is no middle ground with this or the cover from a while ago you're either pro or con and both sides are taking it to extremes there is already a call for a boycott from people for all dc products due to this announcement while others have started the death and rape threats. There is simply no discussions just arguments

Yes, it was born out of using Barbara as an object, I agree. But you can't deny the impact Oracle has had as a beacon of hope for people in wheelchairs. It's a case of the positive effects outweighing the original thoughtless intentions. A lot of people are criticising out of knee jerk reactions IMHO.

I do hope Timm and co keep both Barbara and Gordon clothed in the adaptation. I don't need sexual violence or the implication of it in this at all.

It would be a completely different story if Barbara became Oracle in the Killing Joke. Or if Barbara was the subject of her own trauma. But Oracle didn't exist when it was written. Yes, other people brought Barbara into a much better direction. Probably largely due to people being unhappy or offended with the way this female character was treated in the Killing Joke.

Well yeah, like I said, the ultimate effect was worth it, but it's Moore and Len Wein that where being thoughtless. It's a rose that grew out of fertiliser (Even though TKJ is one of my favourites).

So they're animating the fertilizer and not the rose.

Killing Joke is such a short comic book story so I wouldn't be surprised if we see Oracle in this movie, but then it would mean the story needs to extend from it's popular ending with Batman and Joker laughing it away.

I can understand the complaints. I overall quite liked TKJ and think that it's a great Joker story. But I do NOT like how Barbara was treated in the whole thing, nor (per Alan Moore himself) DC's attitude towards the whole thing. I like the Oracle stuff that came out of it, but wish that we could have had a less "problematic" starting point.

Frankly I'd be ok with them "adjusting" that for the film.

I'm fine with what you guys are complaining about. I just don't really care about it the way you guys care. I think it's a great story.

It's not really Alan Moore who's to blame. He was writing a self contained one-shot for adults, later DC put that story into the mainstream comics. Other stories showed flashbacks or revered to it etc...That was a dumb thing to do. You can only show/do controversial stuff so much.

It would be cool if they indeed showed the story from Barb's perspective. This way they can show in the prequel scene that's she's a powerful woman, not just a victim. I guess that's a powerful message being sent to other woman (or men) who have encounterd something horrifing.

Pff, crying about the Killing Joke here, too?
Boy, 2015 is definitely the year of the *********.

Grow a pair and learn that this is just a fiction. The real world is much, much worse.

If women being treated as objects is a matter you really care about, then do something about it... you know in real life, helping people with REAL problems.

Crying on the internet about the impact of a Batman story and how much nudity it should have? I mean seriously?

The issue certainly isn't about nudity, which shows your total lack of understanding of the topic. You realize entertainment and culture are tightly bound to each other right? If you don't think being critical of entertainment is important because it's not the "real world" then you don't think the Killing Joke is important. So why bother animating it?

I agree. This would have made a better story, and could still be a better animated movie. But it's not the Killing Joke.

definitely need to get Conroy and Hammil in on this

can't wait!

It would be such a shame if Conroy and Hamill weren't used in this movie.

I seriously can't wait for this, it was such a logical story to adapt. I hope we get an adaptation of TLH, Dark Victory, and Hush in the future too.

They'd have to drag Hamill away kicking and screaming, because he wants this movie so badly.

Guys it's a comic with a fictional character. There is no need to make a big deal about this. Nobody got hurt in the making. This is why now I don't want this movie because of this self-righteous, feminist back-lash against a piece of fiction, what is just a story. Can't we get riled up about more important and real issues like er-I don't know actual violence and rape? Maybe ISIS terrorism? Government spying? No we are more concerned with the life and safety of a illustrated, fictional female character. It is about on par with people who obsess over the Kardashians.

I wonder how this is gonna get adapted. It's a short book so adapting it into a 77 minute feature without padding it with useless crap will be challenging.

Gotta look at what all we can lengthen - maybe the chase scene at ACE chemicals. Perhaps we can have the land lady he speaks of us actually talking down at him or see the actual failed stand up act. Perhaps more time with his wife or more time with Barbara.

i came on here to say the same thing. this is a bit worrying.

It is part of the reason I am not a HUGE TKJ fan. TDKR, Year One and all of course, I get it, agree, love them. But TKJ is a little further down on my list due to its short length and lack of Batman, but could argue it's more of a Joker story than Batman.

Taking a semi-short story and finding a way to make it longer isn't worrying. Taking a 30+ issue saga and making a 70 minute movie out of it... that is worrying.
