Batman: The Killing Joke animated film is coming

If they ever try and make those Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale stories they most definitely need to be two-parters.

I don't have much faith in these animated projects since most of them are really generic and have little rewatch value. There has been some gems. Batman Year One is probably my alltime favorite Batman story and the animated version was quite boring and lifeless. The Dark Knight Returns on the other hand was quite good.

I hope Timms involvement makes this work, the story itself is a bit overrated and writes the characters out of character. It also gives a wierd misogynistic vibe to it all that in the story Batman and the Doctor discuss that Barbaras legs are useless, like why would a doctor do that with Batman? Batman is not Barbaras dad or husband or anything . Has to be said that the story has some good dialogue and Brian Bollands artwork is fantastic.

That is another thing I really hope for the film, that the animation would be great, the last few efforts have to me looked like saturday morning cartoons, and Bollands art really deserves something better.

I'm hoping Grayson is in it like what if Grayson and Barbara are engaged, and he finds out what happened to Barbara. Pushing him over the edge where he wants to kill The Joker, it could be a twist this whole time we thought The Joker's target was Gordon when really his real target was Grayson. :yay:

It would be nice if it didn't have the current DTV standard look they've gone with. Nt being part of the New 52-based films, that would make it likely.

Conroy is retweeting petitions to have him and Hamill in this movie.

.

A bit harsh, damn but.... yeah. I too love the comic but yeah the animated film wasn't bad, ya know it was no Batman & Robin but why do you think this is? Cause yeah TDKR was spot on, I'd argue maybe better than the comic (I feel bad saying and thinking that sometimes) Because Year One is so beloved, the adaptation was very faithful to the material but everyone came away from it like "meh."

Ya know I was shocked when Year One didn't blow everyones minds. I loved it.

Same here, it's a great adaptation.

I liked the Year One adaptation; the biggest reason I'm not crazy about the movie is because I was never that crazy about the story. It's a great James Gordon story. But it's not really a great Batman Origins story. Gordon's story arc is much more developed and better executed, in my opinion, while Bruce's stuff has some cool moments but is kind of lackluster in comparison. I prefer something like Zero Year, where Bruce is front and center throughout the entire thing, and where the prototype villains are a bit more tied into it. Red Hood Gang > two thugs on a fire escape.

And I've kind of got the same feelings initially about Killing Joke: it's a great villain monologue for the Joker, but even his great and lasting crime in the story is more incidental to his objectives than anything else. I mean, yeah, he shoots Babs and cripples her, and takes pictures and a lot of other horrible stuff, but he's doing it to torture the Commish. It's not his triumph over Batgirl, which his killing of Robin was to Jason Todd. It's just a detail, a step in his plan. And then Batman shows up...and thats really not all that interesting in that part of the story to me. Which is kind of odd, since Joker killing Sara Essen Gordon in NML and Batman and Gordon deciding what to do with the Joker feels much better written to me. I guess the way they played the Joker's scowl over her corpse and petty taunts to Gordon made her death much more real to me.

I'm hopeful they use the extra big they're adding to the story to try and amend some parts for Babs; even Allan Moore thinks her crippling is a weakness in his original story. Throw in her trouncing the Joker the night before he breaks out and comes after her and her father, then throw in an epilogue of her becoming Oracle, and I think you've fixed this stories greatest problem.

A lot of people didn't care too much for Ben McKenzie's performance as Batman either.

It would appear that John DiMaggio has thrown his hat into the ring for The Killing Joke.

He got a little snippy when a fan told him it NEEDS to be Mark Hamill in the upcoming movie, before retweeting a bunch of comments praising his previous performance as the character.

I guess we know who's definitely not voicing Joker. :o

Are you really sure that the voices would have already been cast, Pfeiffer-Pfan? I mean would DiMaggio be acting like this if the role had been cast already? He'd know how this animation game works. Conroy's been retweeting support petitions for him and Hamill to be cast in it, too.

Unless this one is running incredibly late in production, then it's highly unlikely that this hasn't been recorded. I could be very wrong but I think Mark and Kevin are locked in.

Did you see that picture Phil Morris (Vandal Savage in the DCAU) posted on twitter wth Bruce Timm. He used the hashtag 'The Killing Joke' and Mark Hamill favored it. Seems curious to me.

Even the voice cast of Justice League: Gods and Monsters were saying in interviews recently how they recorded it early last year and were wondering if it was ever going to come out.

Lots of things really, I thought at times Ben Mckenzie was very wooden as both Batman and Bruce. Like he hadn't had enough time to learn to do voice acting. At times it sounded truly like a guy just reading stuff that is written on papers infront of him. That alone does a lot. A shame, since im sure he could do a decent job.

The animation didn't capture the magic of artwork, and I wasn't particulary impressed with the script, its a short story, but somehow it just dragged here when they tried to make it work as a 80 minute film.

The bit i disliked most was that they completey failed with the scene where Batman rescues the cat from the idiot SWAT team. That scene may be silly, but Bruce's line in the book about "It was you, wasn't it? the one who tried to shoot the cat?" followed by the cap flying through a wall is such an awesome scene where you start to root for the hero.

As a animated film I guess its ok, but for me, its not enough. And I hope TKJ works better for them,

As i said earlier, I thought they did well with The Dark Knight Returns.

Timm and Romano would have been crazy to have given it to anyone else. The minute Timm was involved I KNEW it would be Conroy and Hamill.

And while this isn't official confirmation, it's enough to strenghen my suspicions that the two of them are simply playing the PR game (and have signed an NDA).

Has twitter began attacking Hamill for accepting a role on this vile movie? Will Star Wars get boycotted too by twitter too? ;)

Not gonna lie, even though we all knew it was going to be Hamill and Conroy (if Hamill's in, there's no way he won't be) I'm still breathing a sigh of relief. Now I've got my fingers crossed that they'll bring Bryan Cranston back to voice Gordon.

:hehe: The folks over at TheMarySue seem cool about it...

Barbara needs to be the subject, not the object, of the story.

There is the problem, Joker didn't want to drive Barbara insane, he wanted to do it to her dad. What would mess Jim up more, messing up his daughter? Or just torturing him for a while?

I like Batgirl and I'm glad to see her back as Batgirl in the new 52. But I don't think it's fair to say if you have something bad happen to a girl and the story isn't about that girl then it is sexist.

I guess your basically saying if the story isn't about Barbara than the writers should of thought of a different scene to show Joker trying to break Jim Gordon. The comment "cripple the *****" I thought was horrible and as a fan of Batgirl I didn't like it at all.

But if someone told me Joker torturing Barbara would be the best way to tell a story of him trying to break Jim Gordon my response would probably be "that makes sense" as opposed to "Find another way because regardless if it makes sense to the plot it's kinda sexist".

Everything little thing is going to be a feminist or MRA issue regardless. Best just to ignore all of them and enjoy.

YAY!

finally confirmation that Mark Hammill is coming back :woot: so there's a good chance that Conroy will come back as well
