Well, after telling myself I would make one of these threads forever, I finally decided to get on my a** (and in my chair at my desk) to do it. :woot:

I really admire viewing all the different threads here and observing the various art forms, so I figured I post my own stuff as well. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

PS: Everything is posted oldest to newest (bare in mind some of it is quite old). Hopefully, you'll be able to see the obvious improvement in my work that I've seen.

Well there we are, that's pretty well everything I've done that's worthwhile of posting. Hopefully this thread will be filled with lots more of my stuff as time passes. As I said before, comments are always welcome, as are requests if anything springs to anyone's minds (as you can tell, I mainly deal with covers, so any interesting cover requests would be cool to do).

All of those are awesome. I really love TDK PS3 cover.

The Joker Trick is cool too

Thanks a lot man. I really appreciate it. :)

Alright, tried something new here. Let me know what you guys think.

PS: I don't have any TIMEs lying around at home, and couldn't find any images of the spine of the magazine on the web, so I just sorta made it up. I hope no regular TIME readers are offended by this. :woot:

EDIT: Mistake fixed. Here it is.

For the DVD's don't make the writing on the back so 3D looking and don't use too much of a glow either.

No Country for Batmen...Brilliant!
I also like the "Why So Serious" Blu Ray.
Great job! I am glad you finally got "on" you @$$ LOL!

Hehe, thanks man. I appreciate it. The TIME magazine one should be back up in a couple of minutes. I had to run before I could fix it.

Whipped this up quickly. I may put some more effort into when I have time, and do a better trace of the Joker (just make it a little cleaner around the hair, etc. but whatever). It's the "limited edition cover" of the TIME magazine:

Was bored and decided to do one more TDK game cover.

I figured I'd post this in my thread as it can sort be considered "art".

Back in December, I started up a video editing campaign for a fictional superhero movie I conceived called "Which Side Are You On?". The campaign, modeled off of a movie's advertising campaign, consisted of 15 TV spots, 1 Teaser trailer, 3 Theatrical Trailers and 5 clips. The final video containing the 5 clips was just uploaded today.

Basically, the movie's a Marvel/DC crossover in which the heroes must unite to take on Lex Luthor, but of course there are it's twists and turns along the way.

I started the campaign with "static" promo videos hinting at the crossover that was coming (to see those, just check out my YouTube channel). Below are the "official advertising" videos I've created. as well as some artwork used in the campaign. Enjoy, and tell me what you think.

And I'm spent. :woot:

Uh... buddy, it's called constructive criticism.

Didn't really sound like constructive criticism dude, that's all. I would have taken the comments as constructive criticism had you not presented them in the manner that they were fact, and that you were right and I was wrong. Your post didn't really sound like all you were doing was presenting your opinion. That's all.

No man, not my opinion. It's fact. Look at all the real DVD covers or if you want more credibility from me, look at my DVD covers. It's just a tip from one DVD artist to another.

He told you two things not to do on DVD covers. It's constructive criticism. Look at DVD covers and you'll see why he suggested what he did. You add drop shadows to all of your text, which is a mistake. If you can't take criticism like that without getting defensive, then maybe you should stop posting your work.

Here's an example of what you could try to make the writing visible:
tdkdvdpreviewii3.jpg

Notice the colour of the writing is the same as the background but it's still visible? Make a copy of the layer in a darker colour and shift it over to the right (1 pixel at 100dpi) 3 pixels at High-Res (300dpi) and down 2 pixels

EDIT: here's another shot

Yes, I'm aware it's constructive criticism now that he's made it clear of his intentions, but to me, it didn't sound very constructive. It sounded to me as if he was stating fact. He could have been more "constructive" about it I guess, ie: "Next time try...", or, "You should have...", not just flat out tell me what to do. But no biggie I guess. I didn't respond angrily or crazily, I was just kinda confused as to how he stated his comment. That's all I'm trying to get at here. I don't want a big argument or anything.

And as for the drop shadows being a mistake, I'll gladly acknowledge that it may not be pleasing on the eyes to some viewers, however, to say that it is wrong is, to me, a bit absurd. Are you a professional graphic designer? If you are, than by all means, thanks for the tip and I'll try to avoid it in the future, however, until you get me the official "Do's and Don'ts" of DVD cover making, I can't see how you can call doing that a mistake. If I flipped the DVD logo upside down, yes that'd be a mistake. Spelling "Christopher" wrong on the back cover, yes that'd be a mistake. But adding a drop shadow to the text doesn't scream mistake to me unless it's 100% cut and dry against the "code" of making of DVD covers. It's just an opinion thing (to my knowldege of course, please do correct me if I'm wrong as I stated above).

Obviously you two do not like the drop shadow, some people I've shown the cover to have no comment about it at all. It seems to me it's, as I stated, a matter of opinion. But as I said before, if you're a professional graphic designer and have studied this stuff and really do know what you're talking about, I'll take your word for it and am complimented that you're trying to help me out. Anyways, I really don't want to start an argument over this. Thanks for chiming in anyways.

PS: I can take the criticism, I'd just expect constructive criticism to be a little "friendlier" (for lack of better word). I thank AM though for at least following up on it with an example just above this post. That was a nice gesture and I appreciate him taking the time to give me an example of what he's trying to convey.

Thanks for the tip. I assume that method is what constitutes the "stroke" look of your lighter text on the back cover?

Adding Drop Shadows to text is a general no-no unless the text itself is a design. The SHH logo at the top of this forum, the shadow works because the type is a solid mass. Your drop shadow use on normal font, makes it harder to read.

Seriously man, you need to chill out and not get so defensive when people criticize your work. That's the nature of the business. You don't fight back against criticism, you take it and improve. People who fight back all the time lose a lot of respect.

It's what I used on the light coloured text yes. What do you mean by "stroke" though? haha And yeah I have a job with Graphic Design now. Sorry if I'm up front, just how I am. People were upfront with me from the beginning when I was using paint and would work hours upon hours on something and end up having someone just bash my work pointing out all the flaws. At the time I felt offended because I'd work so hard and be satisfied only to have people tell me about the flaws, but now that I look back on it every one of them gave good constructive criticism which made me the artists I am today (not that I'm anything exceptional) I was once told this by a graphic designer before me and I'm passing it on "Why go for satisfying when you can go for extraordinary?" Personally, I don't like when people just quickly throw together a poster for a cover, a shot for the back with writing and that's it (not saying you did that) Again, I like it, I like the idea and everything but I think if you keep at it your work will become extraordinary. Keep up the work bro

Dude, I'm chilled. LOL If I'm giving off the impression that I'm freaking out or not handling the situation properly, I apologize and sincerely tell you it's not my intent. I was just curious as to how you came off as calling it a mistake. You've given me my answer, and I appreciate you following up with me about it. I reiterate though, if I'm giving off the impression that his has "shaken me up" or am coming off too strong against you, I do apologize. I didn't want this to become a big argument. I hope things are cool. :)
