In case you don't know, Beyond the Red Line is an extensive fan game project based on the Battlestar Galactica universe. It's a full-game conversion of Freespace 2 availible for PC, Mac, and Linux, although Freespace 2 is not required to play it (Freespace 2 is now open source). Several enhancements have been made though, such as additional tactical maneuvers for the fighters and enhancements to the game's graphics (including 16:9 support and a true third-person camera mode).

Basically, if you've played Freespace 2, you should know basically how the game plays. It's a space combat simulator that puts you at the controls of a Viper, and lets you blow away Cylon Raiders in objective-based missions. The story line runs parallel to events of the series, and it's got some surprisingly decent voice acting. Some characters give off a bit of a "William Shatner" vibe, but still it's a lot better than what you find in a lot of retail games. The graphics are nice, the sounds and music are familiar for fans of the show, and most importantly, it's FREE. It also plays very nicely with my T-Flight Hotas joystick, which is most certainly a plus.

The Asteroid escort mission was a bit of a pain to get through in the demo, but the thing to remember is that this game is a work-in-progress. Currently the game is in the beta-demo phase, so you only get flight training plus two full missions at this point. As time goes on though, I'm sure that the game's difficulty and overall polish level will only improve, as will the mission selection. It's shaping up to be one of the better space shooters I've played in a while. If you're a BSG fan or you grew up with games like Wing Commander, this game will leave you eagerly awaiting the full version. And did I mention it's FREE?

Also, I should mention that the game has a pretty slickly made multiplayer mode, but unfortunately I have yet to try it because I haven't yet found any other players. If anyone wants to arrange a match sometime, I'd be happy to participate! :)

That looks pretty neat and freespace 2 looks like it has aged gracefully considering how long it's been around for a decade.

They did make a Battlestar Galactica game but apparently it's rubbish.

There's also a BattleStar Galactica total conversion for homeworld 2 that's suppose to be pretty well made.

I think there was already a thread about this like a year or so ago. The game is awesome(the controls are difficult) And the community is a very cool place as well, with people creating their own down loadable missions , some with new music created by folks in that community.

Get Your Battlestar Galactica Fix With These Games

"After a run of over five years, Battlestar Galactica finished over the weekend, and there's a hole in my heart. Probably one in yours, too. One that needs filling.

I mean, you've got to fill it with something. It's not like the show will magically continue next week. It's over. Well, aside from an epilogue TV movie and a spin-off/prequel series. But aside from those? It's over. Meaning that you're going to have to get your Galactica fix from somewhere else, and while board games or, uh, fan fiction might appeal to you, you're more likely to be interested in some games. Games like these ones."
