Fantasy Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice returns!

Why is an ovation less than five minutes noteworthy or earth-shattering? Why not just say, Tim Burton received a big or huge audience ovation? I mean at the end of a live performance people give big ovations for the curtain call, and that can last for a few minutes at least.

It used to be not a thing to report it until it became a viral thing when they kept reporting it from Cannes and now every festival is trying to time standing ovations. But like what that tweet said, it's basically seeing how long people give standing ovations during the curtain call where a camera guy pans to each actor in the theater and they all clap and applaud, not necessarily when the movie they just screened is done.

me and my brother and his family are SO seeing this next weekend!

Needless to say, Keaton got deserved accolades for the original movie. And to the extent there was criticism, it was not enough Keaton. (His total screentime was something like 17 minutes.) But you could make the case that the judicious and minimalist appearance of the title character was actually a strength.

So I’m wondering if they’ll take this same minimalist approach for the sequel. Or will they try to “fix” their previous “mistake.” I.e., the more Keaton, the better.
On a recent talk show interview, Keaton said that his screentime is approximately the same as the first movie.

I think that’s smart tbh.

He may be the title character, but I think treating him like the main character would diminish him a little bit.

Looks like Burton is back!! Wednesday can't get here soon enough. Excellent way to start the season.

Yeah, as a childhood fan of his it’s really nice to see. He mentioned how Dumbo broke his spirits where he wanted to just retire from directingl but Wednesday reinvigorated him and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was one his favorite filming experiences.

I hope after Wednesday Season 2, he does something personal ala Edward Scissorhands. I’m sure WB will offer him all the money if Beetlejuice opens as big as it’s supposed to.

I gotta admit i'm shocked to see this. I did not think the Beetlejuice IP had much cache with modern mainstream audiences at all. Happy to see it though!!
I don't think it's just the Beetlejuice IP alone that's giving it traction, but the reviews being promising only help it all the more. I reckon there are still plenty of Burton fans out there who've been longing for him to get back to his roots. It's easy to forget now but he had a sizable fanbase over the '90s and '00s that kind of diminished in the years between Alice in Wonderland and Wednesday. I was going to see this regardless of the reviews but it's going to be the first Burton movie I'm seeing in theaters in 12 years. I have to imagine it's a similar situation for a lot of people.

In a world where The Flash never happened and James Gunn isn't running DC, I feel like WB would be backing up a Brink's truck to bring back Burton and Keaton for a third Batman film with the huge success it looks like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is going to be.

Maybe it's for the best, but man if they were able to recapture some of the magic here it makes ya wonder.

I think one big key here is families. The original is a spooky season staple for a whole generation and many of those people have introduced their kids to it over the years. It's also survived in pop culture via Halloween costumes, goth culture, the musical and just being on TV all the time. There's also a lot of other backdoor ways through Burton's other popular films for younger folks to find it. It's a pop culture staple, no way around it!

Considering Keaton was by far the best thing to come out of The Flash, it would’ve been an event that’s for sure. Add in Jenna Ortega as Carrie Kelley/Robin, and you’ve got a Burton style Dark Knight Returns.

Oh man...love that idea.

Or they can get Sophia Lillis for Carrie

Yeah, That'd be a better option imo
Don't need Ortega being all dour and emotionless, someone with more spunk needs to offset Bruce's darkness in a story like that

Well, this is the Burton version which will never happen. He’s on a hot streak with Ortega so in this theoretical version, she’ll be just fine in the role lol

Burton
Elfman
Keaton
Pfeiffer
Dafoe (Scarecrow)
Ortega/Sadie Sink (C. Kelly)

Low budget. Fall premiere. One final rush of nostalgia.

We could've had it all. If only it wasn't for that damn Flash.

Just got out and thought it was pretty fun and very charming. Keaton and Defaoe kill it; and Winona is as stunning as always. Found myself laughing out loud multiple times.

This was fantastic! So damn entertaining, and it really really felt like an old school Burton movie. There are several moments where I was just sitting there smiling because of that. There's even a shot with a tree that reminded me of Sleepy Hollow (1999)

The practical FX and stop motion stuff was wonderful to see, and helped make it feel like a Burton movie from an era long past.

The cast was also fantastic. Keaton was as good as ever, Catherine O'Hara Hara was hilarious (and the MVP!), and Jenna Ortega, once again, proves why she has become such a huge star. Everybody here was at the top of their game.

A wonderful follow up to Burtons classic. The moment I heard that theme song, I felt instantly transported. The entire audience I was with was so into it too. They all applauded at the end too! Oh I can't forget to mention Willem Dafoes character! He's an instant classic.

This will be a yearly rewatch around Halloween with the first film back to back. Burton is Back!

9/10
