Plot Summary: Master filmmaker Sidney Lumet directs this absorbing suspense thriller about a family facing the worst enemy of all – itself. Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Andy, an overextended broker who lures his younger brother, Hank (Ethan Hawke) into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target. The problem is, the store owners are Andy and Hank's actual mom and pop and, when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry, the damage lands right at their doorstep. Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei plays Hoffman's trophy wife, who is having a clandestine affair with Hawke, and the stellar cast also includes Albert Finney as the family patriarch who pursues justice at all costs, completely unaware that the culprits he is hunting are his own sons. A classy, classic heist-gone-wrong drama in the tradition of "The Killing" and Lumet's own "The Anderson Tapes," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is smart enough to know that we often have the most to fear from those who are near and dear.

Marisa Tomei is naked in the first half of the film,I wanna see this, and not because of her either.

Beat me to it Hunter.....I saw a brief clip...I believe they were promoting and the Toronto Film Festival.....I thought it looked pretty good.

I saw this last night, one of the most disturbing openings to a film ever as the bare, thrusting buttocks of Seymour Hoffman adorn the screen. :csad: Still from here it is a good drama, all of the characters are unlikeable which means there is nothing to root for or feel good about, it's simply a character study of two brothers intertwining, crumbling lives , one made to soft by his father's love and the other made to cold by the lack of love from his father, maybe it's neither and both are just who they are ?

The acting is first rate, Hoffman starts out in repugnant sneering mode but slowly disintegrates and strips the layers away from his character as things spiral out of control, he is a whirlwind of rage in the last 20 minutes or so.
Ethan Hawke gives a jittery and nervy slant to his character that makes him kinda uncomfortable to watch as he gets further and further in over his head with a harpy of an ex wife and his stupid choices.

The ending is very bleak but powerful although a touch unsatisfying as what happens with Hawke's character is not made clear, all in all pretty good and Maresi tomei has an amazing body for a 44 year old, hell it's amazing for a 24 year old. :D

7.5/10

I saw this about 2 months ago, quite a good film. It's nice to see that Lumet's still got it. Very strong cast, especially Hoffman. And a really, really bleak story. At one point in the movie Hoffman's character says something like ''We've got problems'' which is the biggest understatement...ever. :p
