Maria Bello, Abigail Breslin and Samuel L. Jackson will star in the indie drama Rape: A Love Story, reports Variety.

Harold Becker (Domestic Disturbance) will direct. Michael Mendelsohn is producing and financing through his Patriot Pictures, with filming scheduled to start in June.

Based on the Joyce Carol Oates novella published in 2003, the story centers on a mother (Bello) recovering from a brutal gang rape who is stalked by the perpetrators but is protected by a sympathetic cop (Jackson). Breslin will play the woman's 12-year-old daughter, who witnesses the attack.

Veteran TV writer John Mankiewicz ("House") adapted the screenplay.

I read some reviews for the book and it seems if they adapt it well this could be very powerful stuff.

Where's that gif of Brian drinking his soda awkwardly from "Anchorman" when you need it?

let's just hope it's handled tastefully !

Wow...the book...okay...NO. I'm just saying no. I read the book a couple years ago and though it's good, the subject matter irritates me and makes me want to kill kill kill.

So the love story is between Maria Bello and Sam Jackson?

No, according to what I read it is not that kind of love, it is Sam Jackson's character forming a fatherly bond with the daughter as the mother struggles to cope, also apparently the Jackson character was much younger in the book.

As soon as I hit "Rape: A Love Story" in the first sentence, I thought this would be something like Springtime for Hitler - you know, some kind of comedy.

I hope this turns out to be better than The Brave One. I must say, the source material and the cast have got me interested so far. I like Bello (she's not in enough movies), and am excited to see Breslin get something where she can exercise her drama skills.

the title reads like they are in some kind of wait list

Joyce Carol Oates is pretty f**ked up... I've never read this story, but here book "Zombie" was one of the most disturbing things I've ever read.

This sounds like it might be okay, but I'm really, really, really, really, really, really, getting tired of Samuel L. Jackson playing a cop in every damned movie. I guess this is why he took that nine-picture deal playing Nick Fury. It must make him feel like he's really "branching out" as an actor.
