There are many decent fantasy movies, but the best for me:
Conan the Barbarian (1982) - sword and sorcery.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (theatrical) - high fantasy.
Absolutely. S&S has a special place in my heart. But I don't mind dragons and dwarves. I love fantasy in general. As long as the story is solid, I'm in. For example, I'm enjoying Game of Thrones great deal.Stamped in wax. I do wish Sword & Sorcery got more respect, but it seems for a fantasy film to succeed nowadays, it needs to go all out with gnomes and dwarves and dragons, i.e. "high fantasy."
There's a number of books, that deserve an adaptation. Maybe with success of Game of Thrones and Witcher there's a chance (I heard they're cooking a Witcher movie, but it doesn't look like it's moving forward). But since mainstream is busy with comic book films, I doubt it will happen in near future.I'd love to see Karl Edward Wagner's Kane and Michael Moorock's Elric brought to the screen, but I'm not holding my breath.
I was such a huge fan of Elfquest books as a kid. It's among my most wanted adaptations.A film adaptation of Elfquest, with director Rawson Thurber attached, was planned, but it stalled and didn't get past the development stage.
