Best Movie Year Ever: 1994 vs. 1999

Some of you might disagree, but I happen to think that 1994 and 1999 are the two best years in film history. There were so many classics, with such a wide variety of genres, I don't think either year has been touched since in terms of awesome movie after awesome movie. Not to mention, the 90's nostalgia factor is unparalleled. So I ask, which year is the winner?

While I certainly agree that '99 was a great year in film, I have to give it to '94.

Out of those two years, '94. Barely.

One could just as easily name: '34 (The Thin Man, The Gay Divorcee, It Happened One Night, L'Atalante, The Black Cat...) or '91 (A Brighter Summer Day, Terminator 2, Silence of the Lambs, JFK, Barton Fink, House of Smiles, Thelma and Louise, City Slickers), or '93 (Three Colours Blue, Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, Schindler's List), or 2000 (Yi Yi, American Beauty, Boys Don't Cry, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Traffic). Not to mention the years that produced The Big Sleep, It's a Wonderful Life, Duel in the Sun, Postman Always Rings Twice, Yearling, Razor's Edge, Rome Open City, Turning Point, and Best Years of Our Lives ('46); Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Another Thin Man, or almost any other fairly decent year.

But... but... this is 1994 and 1999.

But '94's the better of the two. Ashes of Time, Pulp Fiction, Leon, Exotica, Barcelona, Crumb, Heavenly Creatures, Imaginary Crimes, The Lion King, Little Women, Three Colours Red, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Vive L'Amour, and The Crow.

Don't if it's the best year ever but 1994 was pretty solid.

Crazy not to see sequels up there. I'm getting too used to these modern times...

I prefer 99. The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, The Green Mile, American Beauty, Toy Story 2, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, The Insider, Eyes Wide Shut and The Iron Giant.

But then Matrix as well, hadnt seen a trailer going into it, thought "Pfft Keanu Reeves this could be a load of shiii...............WHAT THE HELL HAVE I JUST SEEN!!"

1994 had the one-two-three punch of Jim Carrey. Ace Ventura - The Mask - Dumb and Dumber.

Has there been a more stunning debut from a comedic actor in a single year?? It's possibly unprecedented.

Batman vs. Superman

Once we have release dates confirmed for 007 and others... I might agree.

1994 had 5 of my all time favorite movies: The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Pulp Fiction, Forest Gump, and Shawshank Redemption.

1994 had only 3: The Matrix, Fight Club and Office Space.

So 1994 wins but both were legendary years for movies.

All sequels or reboots. I'm not saying they won't be good, but my vote is for years that have more original movies and not something meant to be part of a franchise.

Yeah most of these movies on these list were original films that were break out successes, not franchise films.

Hollywood is different now.

Everyone's looking for the next TDK or Harry Potter, instead of the next Fight Club or Pulp Fiction.

1999 seems to be one of the riskiest years ever, in terms of being artistically original and daring, and being very sexual and violent. American Pie, American Beauty, and Eyes Wide Shut were extremely sexual and bold films. Then with The Matrix and Fight Club, these aren't your typical films either. Both were very violent and audacious, even by today's standards. Blair Witch and Sixth Sense were also game-changers for their genre, and were very original. Man, that was a crazy, crazy year.

Then with 1994, you have three of the greatest films ever made - ever. The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, and Forrest Gump. I don't think any year since has produced three all-time classics like those three.

Honestly, if I only had to pick two release years of movies to watch for the rest of my life, I'd pick these two years. I'd be okay with only watching these movies for the rest of my life. I'm not even kidding you.

Best movie year for me is probably somewhere in the 80's. I'm a kid of the 80's , i've grown up absorbing everything from that decade , so its certainly my favorite (i can't pinpoint which one).

From a more objective point of view , 50 , 60 and 70's got this extremely easy. 1950 , 64 , 72 , 73 , etc , are just the pinnacle of movie making.

Between this two , i'll go to 94. It has Pulp Fiction and WKW released two movies in that year , being one of them one of the movies of my life (chungking).
