I was just thinking about this while discussing Man of Steel with a friend.

Most superhero movies save almost all the heroism and bravery for the guys in tights or their police/soldier allies. Civilians, desk jockeys, and anyone who's tertiary to the story usually just get to be rescued.

But they don't always follow that rule. And it's these rare instances that I want to talk about. To be specific, what moments of non-powered heroism/ bravery carried out by regular supporting cast members are most memorable to you?

Here's three of my favorites:

- Steve Lombard and Perry White try and rescue Jenny from the World Engine in MOS. Seeing Perry be brave isn't a surprise, nor is seeing a Jimmy Olsen archetype in danger. No, what sells this is 1) the futility of their rescue attempt as the destruction wave gets closer and closer, and 2) Lombard wanting to run, really bad, but still coming back to what looks like certain doom. This moment made me care about all the destruction and power of the World Engine; Clark keeps questioning whether humanity is worth it. This scene proves it.

-The Old Man has enough of Loki's lip in Germany, and refuses to kneel in Avengers. This moment was so organic to the film, which makes sense when you remember that Joss Whedon came up with it late in the writing process when he realized he was having a villain give a fascistic speech in Germany. Again, the gesture is seemingly futile, considering Loki's power, but it's just so powerful. This guy basically stands up and says "listen, you little punk, I've lived through worse than you and your fancy laser stick of death. And I will not stand by and just let this happen again, you son of *****." Makes Cap's rescue a major "hell yeah!" Moment.

-The scarred convict does what the cop should have done 10 minutes ago in The Dark Knight. This is arguably the emotional climax of the film's main conflict, and has just wonderful set up. Or is a character specialt in big scary thugs type characters. We've seen Githam just go to hell with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. And when the cops and civilians are dancing to the Joker's tune, here's one criminal who's tired of this sickness, and refuses to play along, saving a ship load of innocent civilians while fully expecting to be murdered in turn by them. Great stuff.

So, what are some others? And how would you rate these three moments?

Do love interests count?

There was that cheesy scene in the first Spider-Man where some people were throwing things at the Goblin and sticking up for Spidey.

I was young enough to know that it was in reaction to 9/11, but the little kid I was in the theaters was so happy to see Spidey get some love from the civilians for once.

Not a movie, but:
That dude leading Claire to Daredevil in the dumpster, and both take him to Claire's apartment to have his wounds stitched.
Ben and Karen going after Kingpin.
Foggy saving Karen with his softball equipment.

The Dark Knight Rises:
That guy in prison help in fixing Bruce's damaged back saved Gotham City.

I always :applaud for that scene.

Spider-Man 2, when people stand in the way of Ock on the train.

JJJ protecting Peter from Green Goblin while being choked by Green Goblin was very brave. Though he may have been protecting his source more than the person.

Yukio protecting Logan by fighting Shingen while Logan was on the table was brave and protective. Though she was a skilled warrior she didn't have any combat-based powers

Spider-Man movies have a good amount of that heroic cheese.

Like the little girl pulling Peter up in that burning building he went in to save her from in Spider-Man 2.
May hitting Ock's head from behind. Ock learnt from that and didn't let MJ hit him from behind, or his tentacles did.

Gorje (wind turbine kid) going there in front of R.H.I.N.O., and that guy stops firing and dances a little. ~ The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

That's an excellent choice.
That just goes to show you, Jameson can trust someone other than his barber.

Another good one.

Yinsen saved Tony Stark's life, shamed him into changing his ways, helped him build his prototype armor under threat of torture and then gave up his own life so that Tony could escape. The greatest hero in the MCU.

Oh yeah Yinsen was a real hero. Another awesome mentor guy was Tucci's character in the first Cap movie.

Loved that moment and when she says "Shame on You" and then after when she tells Spidey she was wrong about him

Yinsen was so awesome that I was crushed when I realized they'd only brought him in for a cameo in IM3.

He saves Tony, and then triggers arguably the most enjoyable beat down by a MCU hero on moods and henchmen.

I never realized that was supposed to be an acronym.

Probably this one for me, loved Yukio in that moment. She was pretty much willing to die to protect Logan.

Crane Dad in TASM.

Also the shotgun wielding banker played by William Fichtner in TDK.

the "he stole that guy's pizza" guy in Spider-Man 2

Katie Holmes trying to protect King Joffrey in Batman Begins.
