I was just thinking about this while discussing Man of Steel with a friend.
Most superhero movies save almost all the heroism and bravery for the guys in tights or their police/soldier allies. Civilians, desk jockeys, and anyone who's tertiary to the story usually just get to be rescued.
But they don't always follow that rule. And it's these rare instances that I want to talk about. To be specific, what moments of non-powered heroism/ bravery carried out by regular supporting cast members are most memorable to you?
Here's three of my favorites:
- Steve Lombard and Perry White try and rescue Jenny from the World Engine in MOS. Seeing Perry be brave isn't a surprise, nor is seeing a Jimmy Olsen archetype in danger. No, what sells this is 1) the futility of their rescue attempt as the destruction wave gets closer and closer, and 2) Lombard wanting to run, really bad, but still coming back to what looks like certain doom. This moment made me care about all the destruction and power of the World Engine; Clark keeps questioning whether humanity is worth it. This scene proves it.
-The Old Man has enough of Loki's lip in Germany, and refuses to kneel in Avengers. This moment was so organic to the film, which makes sense when you remember that Joss Whedon came up with it late in the writing process when he realized he was having a villain give a fascistic speech in Germany. Again, the gesture is seemingly futile, considering Loki's power, but it's just so powerful. This guy basically stands up and says "listen, you little punk, I've lived through worse than you and your fancy laser stick of death. And I will not stand by and just let this happen again, you son of *****." Makes Cap's rescue a major "hell yeah!" Moment.
-The scarred convict does what the cop should have done 10 minutes ago in The Dark Knight. This is arguably the emotional climax of the film's main conflict, and has just wonderful set up. Or is a character specialt in big scary thugs type characters. We've seen Githam just go to hell with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. And when the cops and civilians are dancing to the Joker's tune, here's one criminal who's tired of this sickness, and refuses to play along, saving a ship load of innocent civilians while fully expecting to be murdered in turn by them. Great stuff.
So, what are some others? And how would you rate these three moments?
