simple, what's your fav. sci-fi classic, i'm not including some good sci-fi movies that are my fav's cause they're not classic, but the ones in the list for me are what I'd call true sci-fi classics!

TRY THE UPDATED POLL INSTEAD, IT HAS MULTIPLE VOTING OPTIONS INSTEAD, BECAUSE THIS IS TOO HARD: http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243356

This was such a close call for me, 2001/the day the earth stood still/brazil/metropolis/logan's run made this a very difficult poll for me, 2001 was best for me, due to the cinematography that is blissfully sublime, but really I felt bad for not chosing the others, damn.

cue debate about what constitutes "Sci-Fi", "hard Sci-Fi", "Space Fantasy or Space Opera".
YaY!

I selected the best sci-fi's from each of these catergories, so I think it's covered nicely, I'm surprised at the star wars response, i'd understand if it was empire strikes back, but not so much the first one. Oh well, still early days for the poll yet.

The Matrix. I like the characters and the story.

If Matrix is classic, then I choose twelve monkey's or primer or the thing.

No, I'd say with Cyrus in the thread it'll become a debate over whether or not he's massively pretentious.

matrix is a neo-classic(no pun intended), and i think Brazil is a more architypal sci-fi than twelve monkeys. The thing may have been good for the poll, but there are much better earlier versions of that sort of thing included.

Anyway...

I like Metropolis, but it IS a tad, you know, dated.

Really, the best Sci-Fi movie is Empire Strikes Back, but it's weighed down by being the middle act of the trilogy.

ET would have been impossible if not for the day the earth stood still!

I do like empire strikes back, but 2001 I found as more pleasurable, as J S Mill commented on higher pleasures, I think 2001 is the definately a higher pleasure(artsy etc), wheras star wars is a lower pleasure( A DAMN GOOD LOWER PLEASURE THOUGH!!!).

I still think metropolis is great, more relevant today than ever. And without this film, none of the others on the list would have happened, not my personal fav, but so influentail and still great to watch.

Brazil, I could watch it a hundred times and it never gets old...

I disagree. I think that, while I'm a huge fan of Kubrick, 2001 only really aspires to higher pleasure. It always feels like it's trying to be something it isn't, and it drags quite a bit.

But perhaps this is just my own view on ALL media. I'm not a fan of high art, I'm not a fan of art movies that exchange well paced and well structured narrative for almost subliminal motifs and impossible to relate to characters. I'm also no fan of extremely low art, which is just as vapid and uninteresting as a bad art movie any day. I prefer a mix of the two, where we get those themes and motifs but are engaged on a visceral level as well.

Plus, I've found that, in the course of history, the high art is forgotten, and yesterday's low art becomes today's high art. Shakespeare, anyone?

Good points, I can clearly see why people dislike kubrik, especially 2001, but I can't get enough of it, also congrats to the guy who put brazil as their choice, aweseom film, I hate this poll, too hard to decide!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I never said I dislike Kubrick. In fact, I said I'm a huge fan. I'm just not a fan of 2001.

i know, i was just saying why i can see people not liking kubrik, and 2001 is the embodyment of kubrik's more....niche elements? I understand why you don't like 2001, fair opinion:) , just not mine.

What's your fav kubrik then?

I still need to see 2001 SPace Odessy, I might go out and rent it tonight, and come back. Brazil I've seen at least 5-6 times in the past 3 years when I first discovered it in my Library. The movie is a cinematic genius, from the visuals, to the witty dialogue, just utterly superb. And my god, for any fan get the criterion edition and watch the butchered cut, it's utterly unreal...
