Mike and Jesse work way better as secondary characters.

I never really considered Jesse a side character. The show was as much his as it was Walt's, at least after season one.

Yeah, I would never consider him a secondary character in BrBa. We learned as much about him as we did Walt in the end.

The format of this show is much looser than BrBa. There could have never been an episode like this one completely dedicated to a supporting character in that show. The closest they came to that was with Gus in Season 4 but it was still parsed by focus on other characters.

I was about to say before I read your last sentence that yeah, 'Salud' was almost completely the Gus, Jesse and Mike show.

I would make the argument that Gus' episode featured him just as heavily as this episode did Mike. Or, damn near did. Honestly? That's something that would have been a lot more welcomed on BB for me.

Uh oh. You got him mad now. :o

I'm trying to come to a conclusion about last night's episode but all my brain is giving me is, "GODAMN" over and over.

What an episode. A beautiful thing when the writing and acting are able to meet together at such a high degree of quality. That last scene, man. Ridiculous. Excellent character insight.

I wonder if they'll do more character based episodes like this one. They can have episodes from the POV of the clients who "call Saul" and Bob Odenkirk shows up halfway through.

I highly doubt that, this was special because Mike was so important in BB and many wanted to know his backstory, I highly doubt they give an entire episode to some other character.

I think he was considering his story was directly attached to Walt's.

So was almost every other character, but there were also a whole host of supporting characters who were only in the story because of Jesse. It's subjective I suppose, but I get the feeling you'd be in the minority considering Jesse a side character.

As good as the ep was, it kind of doesn't make sense to me that Mike would go on the way he does after realizing how he corrupted/ruined his son. Seems like all he does with Saul and Gus in the future is the opposite of what he came to realize if he wanted to honor his son, unless he just accepts he's corrupt.

Well as the show has shown so far, Jimmy doesn't seem like the type that will turn into Saul. BCS is almost shaping up to be showing them both "breaking bad" Loved the ep. This show is exceeding my expectations so much, Gilligan is a master.

Finally saw it. Definitely the best of the season and it makes me wonder if I'd have preferred a Mike-centric prequel to a Saul-centric prequel. Because I have to be honest; Saul's supporting cast so far like Kim and his brother Chuck bore me to tears. I only really enjoy seeing Saul and Mike on screen (and I guess Nacho when he appears).

Mike's too taciturn and competent to carry a show on his own. Every episode would be him quietly badassing his way past the opposition which would get old quickly. Saul's a charmer and he still has a lot to learn about the criminal underworld, which is more interesting.

I agree that Chuck was dull at first but he's been growing on me ever since that scene where he scuttled across the street to grab the newspaper - perfect tragicomedy. He also provides dramatic tension in that Jimmy clearly wants to break bad but also doesn't want to disappoint Chuck.

Kim's nice enough but she hasn't brought much to the table yet. Hopefully that will change in future episodes.

I know he was almost as important as Walt but what I initially meant is that I don't think he would be interesting as the central character/having his own show.

Ohhhh I see. Well on that point I definitely agree.

That was actually my only real issue with the episode, honestly. I loved it, the story was great, and Jonathan Banks' gave an excellent performance... but I wanted more of Bob Odenkirk, haha.

Although it looks like we'll be getting that next week anyways, so it's all good.

Is the actor who played Gus coming back for Mike's story?

Can't imagine how they avoid those two working together.

I'd have to imagine we'll see him at some point. I really don't think there's any getting around it.

After that whole bit with the vet where Mike tells the guy he's "not looking for that kind of work." it's got to be a certainty we'll see Gus somewhere down the line.

I think Gus will play a similar part in this as he was in Breaking Bad, probably not as relevant as S4 but definitely some presence.
