BLM Protests Across The World

Looks like Wendy’s is on fire in Atlanta. Checked one of the live-streams and it looks like war zone.

Did Wendy tweet something anti-blm or what?

I applaud other countries protesting to show support for the cause in the US where there is a real problem of police brutality. I don’t want that message getting confused and used to attack the police in the U.K. for eg though where we don’t have the same problem.

We don't have exactly the same problem but we have some very similar issues. UK police have used disproportionate force on innocent people at times (particularly black people).

Met officer under investigation after being filmed hitting boy

There was also a story recently on the news of a teenager on his phone who got dragged into a police van pinned down, hit and arrested (for resisting arrest claim the police). He got stripped searched, finger printed and had his DNA taken only to be released the next day without charge.

This guy has a very Italian sounding name for a Confederate sympathizer. I guess no one informed him that those southern racists were not big fans of Catholics/Italians back in the day.

A Black pastor who called 911 after alleged attack was arrested. The sheriff apologized.

This was just 13 days ago.

I remember when Henry Gates was arrested in front of his own home during Obama's presidency. At the time, for whatever reason, my dad decided he was going to take the side of the police. I tried and I tried to get him to see that he himself would not stand for him doing nothing other than standing in the driveway of his property and getting arrested because someone called the police on him... for... standing... on his own property.

I don't know why but he didn't want to see it. And he, as a Hispanic man really should have understood this. On a level he had lived it. When as a teen we moved to rural Northeast Pa. Mom and dad got close to ten acres, creek, log cabin house, barn, the whole nine yards. The property right next to us was owned by a family that had been there for so long there was stuff around town named after them. The owner, a White man, sees my dad walking along the side of the road. Work on this guy's property was done by... Well I don't KNOW if they were illegal immigrants, but... They were always Mexican men between 24-55 who didn't speak English. You do the math. My dad was looking at something, probably deciding where he was gonna set up a split rail fence we put up in the front facing the road. The old man is in his car and starts yelling at my dad IN SPANISH. He picked it up because he had to wrangle his Illegal Immigrant workers. The guy tells my dad "What are you doing over here?" "What are looking at?" "Do I pay you to goof off?" among other things, with harsher language. Now dad was surprised at anyone out there pulling up and speaking Spanish to him. Even more surprised was how this guy was talking to my father like he was his boss or some ****. My dad answers back what does this guy mean? Why are you talking to me like that? It gets heated. Suddenly my dad starts talking English, in his very Brooklyn accented way, and the dude knows this ain't one of his guys, and my dad explains he just BOUGHT this property and moved there with his wife and kids.

Now... This guy made a bad call. He assumed one thing only to have it be way off. And it was resolved without calling the cops. But what if it hadn't? What if that guy had decided he didn't know who this Hispanic man was, he obviously didn't work for him and for what ever reason, maybe he just didn't like my dad's attitude, he calls the cops. "There's a Hispanic guy snooping around the property across from me. Check it out. I ain't seen him before around here."

How would that have played out? I don't know, and I tried to get my dad to see how he would feel if it happened to him at some time.

And events like this one and the Gates one from years back along with so, so very many others is why we are here today.

Really? Because what I have seen of all these protests, is they are as much about where they are occurring as showing support in the US. The UK, French and Canadian police aren't sounding great.

The UK has their own version of Stop and Frisk specifically targeting black and Asian minorities:

Stop and search up by almost a third in England and Wales

Stop and search

Twice as likely for a black person to die in police custody:

How many black people die in police custody in England and Wales?

Black people dying in police custody should surprise no one

Systemic racism and police brutality are British problems too | Kojo Koram

This is before we get into all the racist symbols in the UK. Those in the UK protesting seem to be doing it very much for themselves. Their country. Where people defend statues of racists. Black footballers are attacked in racist manners by fans and the media. Far right groups are totally a thing in Britain. Brexit happened.

I don't know. Systematic racism in the UK, including in the police, seems alive and well.

So much despicable..ness going on and mostly from the goverment and law enforcement

Damn cops sure are trigger happy
It's not as simple as that in this case. There was a struggle, the guy got away with one of the cops' Taser. Did they need to shoot him? No. But it wasn't (to me) as blatant a case as George Floyd.

What the hell has happened to Seattle?
A police station got burned but other than that, it's been calm. Fox News is in trouble for pasting in a guy with military gear into a photo who wasn't there, making it look a lot worse than it is.

This feels like deliberate ignorance. Defunding the police is misleading but everyone knows it means to stop giving them all the power, no responsibility and no longer being called for every little thing going on. Instead you call them when an actual crime is being committed, not there's a black guy living in your neighborhood.

I don't think they burned the police station down. I think the Capital Hill Freezone is still ongoing peacefully. The Seattle PD has revealed themselves to be as bad as a lot of the worse police departments.

I believe it was reported that governor had the police back off in order to de-escalate things and it worked very well, no looting or burning since. Seems like more cities could learn from that.
