I'm always reminded of Col. Jessup's speech in "A Few good Men" when thinking of military and law enforcement officers who do the dirty work that civilizes a society. Being a cop is a hard job and my hats off to anyone who chooses it. They pretty much deal with some of the worse situations in society, the worst people, and some of the horror stories that many of us never have to witness. They throw themselves at this segment and keep us insulated from it to a certain degree. I'm not saying this to say cops aren't without flaws nor deserve a pass on their BS or that they have every right to jettison values because their job is hard. But their day-to-day reality is worth noting, and I'd imagine dealing with that element for so long can eat away at your own humanity. Best to avoid dealing with cops if you can has long been my mantra.

No, the point is he uses that emotional appeal to excuse illegal, immoral, and overall crappy behavior. He is 100% wrong and is baited into admitting it when he explodes when his position is challenged, like any person of privilege. He tries to walk away, and isn't allowed to. Because he's wrong. He is all the excuses the army makes for it sexism, homophobia, and overall poor treatment of human beings distilled into one person. That insane idea that you must mistreat people to get them to be "good soldiers". He's the terrible football coach that abuses kids to make them "men".

Unmmm I don't know, as Jessup's point is argued between real military folks all the time, I've witnessed this in real time. Try it, go to the VA and ask veterans "Was Col. Jessup right?" and watch how they respond. Because how far is too far when it comes to defending the nation, or a society, from internal or external threats? In order to be effective, do the police need to be just as ruthless as the crooks they protect society from? If the barbarians at the gates have no morals, no conscience, and will give no quarter, how do you combat that with people not willing to match that level of aggression?

What a load of post 9/11 bull****. My brother has been a cop for over a decade. In a good sized area between two major cities in Texas. He has had to pull out his gun very, very few times. The average day for a cop is boring. Even in the "crime ridden" areas.

What a load of post 9/11 bull****. My brother has been a cop for over a decade. In a good sized area between two major cities in Texas. He has had to pull out his gun very, very few times. The average day for a cop is boring. Even in the "crime ridden" areas.

Your anecdotal experience doesn't speak for all police officers everywhere. I know an undercover officer who spent years in therapy and still isn't right because of what he saw on the job.

FTR, I think he was wrong for his actions in that particular narrative, absolutely. Shouldn't have done Santiago that way. However, its this concept of needing less than angelic guys to do some of the unconscionable but possibly necessary dirty work. "You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall." And maybe your answer is you don't want or need him on that wall, but when your enemies don't share those same sentiments, then what?

Every society has an answer to this question, and the type of policing we get is a result of that answer.

I'm not saying there aren't losers who believe in it, I'm saying it, as a concept, is an utter delusion. White people are not superior to me, any other black person, or any other race. That's it, that's all. For instance, and I hope I'm not offending anyone here, but flat-earth theory is also an ideology that exists, and there are people who believe that as well, and that idea is rooted in sheer delusion.
