Bought/Thought 8/1

Maybe it is an exaggerated comment, but I usually like DiVito's work. His ANNIHILATION work was excellent. The only reason he faced some harsh judgement on YOUNG AVENGERS was because he wasn't Cheung.

Ironically, I'm probably laxer on ILLUMINATI than MIGHTY AVENGERS. ;)

I flip through the X-Men WWH mini at the shop and his work is good. I wonder if there's a reason Marvel hasn't really given any kind of steady work.

Wasn't Divito announced on that magic event that Sacassa was or is writing? Did I imagine that?

I don't remember if he was announced as the artist for the Mystic Arcana mini, but it'd be cool. He'd be 2-for-2 on non-mainstream Marvel genre revivals. :)

As far as I remember, it's a different magic thing, not Mystic Arcana.

I thought Aguirre-Sacasa was writing the mini-series that all of the Mystic Arcana one-shots are leading up to.

Not from what I recall. I also recall much confusion about it all.

The one-shots are just the build-up to the event. Presumably the event will deal more with what Ian McNee is collecting in the present, since the main one-shot stories don't seem to be all that connected to each other.

Put me in the Divito-likers camp. I thought his (brief) stint on Thing was also very good. And when I saw he was on WWH X-Men, I knew that, even if the story was bad (which it isn't), the art would be superb.

I'm a fan of DiVito, too. I think he's at his best on cosmic stories--Stormbreaker and Annihilation were stupendous.

Why does everyone hate Cammi? Is that in like Bendis-bashing and Yu-hate?

No, I just really disliked her behavior in the Drax mini.

She's a selfish little brat who tries to put everyone else down so that she can feel good about herself.

What's her deal, anyway? Why doesn't Drax just put his fist through her skull?

It's not just underage girls. It's children in general. I hate 'em. They're ignorant and annoying and they usually leak and/or smell.

I like Cammi. Her exchanges with Nova in Nova: Annihilation #2 were funny as hell.

Cammi's awesome. I hope she's the Kree's savior.

So the **** what if this is late!? :cmad:

Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four #4

This was a very enjoyable little mini-series. I haven't read much Spider-Man since The Other and Sins Past so its always a pleasure to read Spidey when I can. In this issue everything gets wrapped up nicely with everyone getting what they want more or less, which in a way is a relief so nobody was really the bad guy in this one.

The art was perfect for such a light romp, the highlight shots for me being the Thing knocking the Imperator up into the sky and the statue that was built in Spider-Man's honor

This would have been a wonderful little ongoing but I guess for something that was only made to cash in on the movies out this year that's expecting too much. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun and kudos to Parker for weaving such an enjoyable story.

5/5

New Avengers: Illuminati #4

I'd like to echo what Dread is always saying. Bendis needs to get Reed to co-write his stuff. We get to see another thread being weaved in what I assume will all tie into the huge Skrull event that Bendis is planning. I always find the Illuminati being an interesting read for all of its problems. I like the group and I like the tensions between them. I find it ironic that it feels far superior to the real New Avengers.

So far we've had Skrulls, the Beyonder and now this. Can Bendis handle something this epic in scope. I doubt it. I think the only reason I sort of enjoy Mighty Avengers is because of Cho's influence on the story.

There were a few problems however. Reed's little bit about humanity being fools felt a little too cold for Reed but they sort of made up for it with the ending. The cover is misleading since I thought the women in their lives would be finding out about the group here but I guess not and by this point its nothing to complain about.

A respectable 3/5.

I thought I'd put this up. The comic is actually from last week, but sometimes I'm slow with getting random issues read. Heck, sometimes I'm slow with getting any issues read.

Unholy Union by Marvel/Top Cow, starring The Incredible Hulk, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, The Darkness, and Witchblade.

First off, a cover by Marc Silvestri, which isn't surprising given that he does a lot of comics for Top Cow books. Possibly surprising (or not) is that Michael Broussard, who did the interior art, produced work that looks a lot like Silvestri's. Looked good.

The story is one of those things that, also not surprisingly, combines some Marvel and Top Cow characters, as in those listed above. And that tends to be it with most of the crossovers - the X-Men/Cyberforce crossover months back was all in all meaningless aside from seeing, essentially, two Wolverines and two Psylockes smack some stuff up. The most recent Wolverine/The Darkness crossover (assuming there have been others, else it's the only one) was actually kind of neat, as while it involved the current Darkness, the story was mostly about Wolverine meeting his ancestor back in WWII. And no, Wolverine didn't get blown up and regrow his entire body. I don't think, anyway.

Daredevil is mentioned in the background (as it was Matt Murdock who defended Jackie Estacado [The Darkness] in a trial happening before the book's events). The Hulk and Ghost Rider are all in all meaningless, mostly just there to add a few awesome looking splash pages and action. Doctor Strange is used as the Sorcerer Supreme rather than a total dope, scrying events first, and then warning The Darkness and Witchblade as to what will be coming. No feature, really, of uber-powerful powers that can melt the skin off this or that, which is nice, because it places him in a subtle role of someone who knows what's going to happen, but won't interfere.

This crossover issue is kind of unique, though. While the Marvel characters don't have a lot to do - which makes sense - what they do makes sense in the context. The issue is mainly to showcase The Darkness and Witchblade in their current roles, as well as show a small scene with Cyberforce and a little bit of The Angelus (the light to The Darkness's dark). It's a prologue of sorts, from here immediately jumping into what I can only assume is going to be Top Cow's big event, First Born, which looks to be a war waged by The Angelus on The Darkness, with what looks like the entirety of Top Cow's characters involved. Or most of them, anyway.

I actually have two First Born issues, the little First Look they did (which might as well be an Issue #0) and First Born #1, but I haven't read them yet.

I read that. It's a bit sad that Dr. Strange felt more like the classic Dr. Strange in a meaningless company crossover story than he has in any of Marvel's comics for a while now. :(

Oh, I also read Welcome to Tranquility, finally. I am now harboring some serious man-love for the Coyote Kid. I hope we see a lot more of him. Hell, I hope Tommy deputizes the guy.
