Box Office 2006 Part 2

Comingsoon's predictions:

Casino Royale: $38 to 40 million opening weekend; $165 million overall.

Happy Feet: $40 to 43 million opening weekend; $245 million total. (This is likely to be one of the biggest movies of the holiday season with insanely strong legs, since audiences are going to love it.)

Let's Go To Prison: $3 to 5 million opening; $12 million total

Thatd be incredible for happy feet.

Kind of low for Casino Royale. Didn't DADA open to 50 million. Then again, Royale doesn't have a big name like Brosnan or Halle Berry to carry it.

I don't think that Casino Royale will outgross Die Another Day. It's not that it's impposible or anything but I believe this is going to be a BatmanBegins situation where everybody is predicting these huge numbers but in the end it's going to do very respectable but lower than it's predecessors numbers, not counting ticket sales though because Begins never had a chance of touching 89's.

I'm thinking 34mil opening and 130mil close.

I think Royale is going to disappoint Sony, because I just don't sense any real buzz right now. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see.

I still don't get why they got rid of Brosnan. I mean, it seems from every spoiler I've read that the entire "origin of Bond" is a minimal part of this movie. So why not let Brosnan have one last go at it? He alone probably raises the box office by 5 to 10 million. Of Course if you go in the CR forum and say that, you die.

That would be a fantastic weekend for hollywood, but I dont see Happy Feet beating Casino... I believe it will be close but I believe Royale will win, for the weekend.

if happy feets within 4 million of casino on friday then it will win the weekend.

Bond vs. the Penguins - Day 1!
Source: ShowBiz Data November 18, 2006

After a lot of conjecture about what might happen over the weekend between two high-profile movies, Sony's relaunch of the 007 franchise with Casino Royale got a strong head start with an estimated opening day gross of $14.4 million, according to ShowBiz Data. That's roughly two million dollars less than Die Another Day, the last installment of the franchise, grossed its opening day two years ago, but it's a fine start for the new Bond, Daniel Craig, having received nearly unanimous rave reviews over the past week.

Opening in nearly 400 more theatres, Warner Bros' animated musical adventure Happy Feet grossed roughly $11.6 million on Friday. Since the George (Babe, Mad Max) Miller directed animated movie is likely to be bringing in a lot more family business over the weekend, one can expect that it should catch up to Bond by Saturday night and is likely to edge past it by Sunday.

Both movies should wind up making between $40 and 43 million this weekend, which would make it the first time that two new movies grossed over $40 million in one weekend since Memorial Day 2005 when Madagascar and The Longest Yard accomplished the same rare feat

Well, CR's opening reminds me of "Batman Begins."

It only made around $40 mil, and ended up with over $200 million.

CR is a great movie, and strong buzz should keep it around.

My God.. Borat is going to break $100 mil.

I was right, Happy Feet made more than Casino Royale.

But as I think, it doesn't mean HF will have better legs than CR.

So I guess CR will make about $150-160m.

Despite two big openers it was the least attended pre-Thanksgiving frame in eight years and lagged 18 percent behind last year when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire debuted to $102.7 million.

I was wrong about happy feet, I figured it would be the other way around. Both of these films should have great legs though, because pretty much everyone like HF, and I loved CR.

Casino Royale Hits Jackpot Overseas
Source: Variety November 20, 2006

Casino Royale dominated at the international box office this weekend with $42.2 million at 3,063 playdates in 27 markets, reports Variety. Including North America, that puts the 21st James Bond movie at $82.8 million worldwide after its first weekend.

The film hit the jackpot in its U.K. launch with $25.6 million at 988 theaters, including $3.7 million in previews. Its Friday-Sunday take tied Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the second-highest weekend launch in British history, trailing only Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

With Daniel Craig in his first turn as Bond, the British opening handily topped the previous Bond pic, Die Another Day, by 46%.

Given the strong international track record of recent Bond pics -- with foreign gross accounting for nearly two-thirds of worldwide box office -- Casino Royale looks poised for potent overseas business that could eclipse the $271 million mark set by Die Another Day four years ago.

Sony has opted to wait until next weekend to launch the film in other major European markets, including France, Germany, Holland, Spain and Sweden.

A action movie have better legs than a kids movie? Not bloody likely.
