"The film tells a story of a divorced couple, Mason and Olivia, trying to raise their young son, Mason Jr. The story follows the boy for twelve years, from first grade at age 6 through twelfth grade at age 17-18, and examines his relationship with his parents as he grows"

This film made me smile and laugh so much and it makes you look back on your youth and the haunting reality of getting older. I really loved this film and you get such an attachment to Mason. This film was shot over a number of years and we witness the growth of the actors over the years.

What a passive aggressive post.

Personally, I'll be watching it in September, that's when it's released in Australia.

Lol I was joking, guess I should have put in a smiley. Didn't know you was Australian good day mate.:yay:

this might be the best movie I've ever seen.

Movie is getting overrated probably because of the rotten tomatoes score and because its filmed over 12 years or whatever it is.

I respect the work they put into it though and Ethan Hawke killed it. Good movie probably and 8-8.5/10 for me

I kind of agree to an extent. I'd still call it a great film, but the first half is really stellar, but once he gets in high school it loses me a bit, and I hate to say it, but it's because the kids not a very good actor. He gets a deeper character requiring more work as he's gets older and he just can't pull it off.

Id agree with this as well

I think the kid did a fine job at accurately portraying a teenager, its just that teenagers on the whole aren't very interesting people.

Towards the last portion of the film, where you see him and his girlfriend visit the college and you can see the widening gulf between them even though he can't, leading to their eventual breakup I thought was really strong.

I think Ellar Coltrane did a serviceable enough job in the last segments of the film, though I agree that he's hardly a revelation. However, a friend of mine pointed out something to me that I never thought about before, about the 5th major character in the film: Richard Linklater.

The film is about his journey as well, as a creative storyteller crafting this tale. Just like Mason, Mason Jr. and Olivia, he is beholden to circumstance, both within and beyond his control. How each of these characters deal with circumstance is key to this film, just as it is to Richard himself. If Ellar turned out to be a brilliant actor like Christian Bale, or if he turned out to be an unemotive rock, that would have been something shaping the story as Linklater would have told it. Instead, Ellar turned out to be something in between. (Taken to an extreme, what if Ethan Hawke had been killed in a plane crash or something around year 6; that again would have been a circumstance affecting the story.)

I liked the movie well enough, and I certainly commend them for the time it took to film it, but I don't see myself ever watching it again.

It's probably a shoe-in to win Best Picture, though.

I have no desire to see it a second time either, but the fact that weeks after, I continue to gain new insights into it through conversations with people I know and online, and from just general personal ruminations, shows how well crafted this film is.

This. The kid reminded me of many cousins I have. You see them at various family reunions, usually spread apart by months or a year. Talkative when they're younger and a little more pensive when they're in their teen years. The actor who played Mason never appeared to be ACTING, which is probably the best compliment I could give him.

If we're going to pick apart acting, let's start with the two actors that played Mason's stepfathers.

Oh man what a treat this was!

I really enjoy the long dialogue exchanges in linklater films.
