The conviction of Mychal Bell, the Jena 6 member found guilty of aggravated second-degree battery earlier this summer, has been overturned, one of his attorneys confirmed this afternoon.

Bob Noel, told The News-Star the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal, found the district court in LaSalle Parish did not have jurisdiction to try Bell as an adult.

He was one of six teenagers arrested for beating a white student at Jena High School. The incident has brought international attention to the small community, with visits from civil rights leaders including Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in recent weeks.
Bell’s lawyers were holding a press conference at 4:30 this afternoon

Well holy crap, there really IS some justice in the world!

What is the story behind this??

A bunch of guys kicked the crap out of one guy, and one of the guys got charged for attempted murder? Did they nearly kill him?

no he went to the hospital and went to a school function later in the day

Black People won :)

This is good news not only for black people in America but all of America. People stepped up their game once this ***** hit major media and took the right action with protesting and all that. I hope these guys all get off.

I haven't really followed it much, but appearently a black student sat under a tree that somehow is usually for white kids, and the next day there were nooses hanging from the tree. The three white kids responsible got a 3 day suspension. The black students held a sit-in against the easy punishment the white noose students got.

And some time later, a white student was I guess harrassing a group of black students, being racist and supporting the noose-hanging kids, and the black students attacked him.

They were all initially charged with attempted murder. Even though the white student was fine and as said above, went to a school thing later that day.

Way to go Louisiana. Still showing those confederate colors.

^Both parties were in the wrong in this case. You can't honestly say you're glad for one group or the other, as they both acted like morons.

Holy ****ing ****.

Initially when I read the first reply in this comment, and the replies in the article itself, I was thinking, "this is weird, why are people showing support for a group of guys that kicked the crap out of and (I assumed) nearly killed him?".

But the guy was fine, and went to school later in the day? They got charged with attempted murder?? What?? That makes no sense at all. What the **** were the police smoking???

Agreed, both sides are full of cowards but the initial noose **** should have had a much stronger punishment and the attempted murder charge was a farce if he went to a function later that day.

Always trying to keep the white man down. :whatever:

I'm kidding. :o Hooray for justice! :yay:

They were smoking Southern Racist pipes.

Agreed, both parties were wrong, but the local government/authorities in Jena have clearly demonstrated a bias towards the white community. Just take the first trial for Mychal Bell as an example: All white jury and the hearing was held in Jena, the public defender never appealed the all white jury or asked for a change of venue nor did he call a single witness in his defense, and the District Attorney Reed Walters told the jury that Mychal's tennis shoes were deadly weapons and the jury agreed which allowed him to be charged with aggravated 2nd degree battery (which requires the use of a deadly weapon by law. And, that's just the tip of iceberg. There was a lot of bias documented prior to the fights or the trial.

Anyway, I'm glad that he got the battery conviction overturned, because the Court of Appeals deemed he should have never been tried as an adult, and hopefully the prosecution team will let it be. Hopefully clear heads will prevail on this, along with the other five.

Exactly the noose incident, should have led to expulsion. Do that as an adult, it's deemed a federal hate crime, and you get a lot of jail time to look foward to.

i don't see how the black group acted like morons. those dudes hung up nooses and they got a three day suspension, then black protestors decided to hold a protest agaisnt that ****ty ass punishment, but they were forced by the governor to call it off saying that he held power over them. just a few students decided to take it far and started the fight. all in all, the black protestors started out as the noble ones in this whole mess.

I believe he's talking about the Jena 6 and not the protestors. The protestors had every right to do what they were doing, as long as it was in a peaceful manner.

Note, i used the word "cowards" the moronic part that Terry referred to is the fact they didn't hold their line they just blew their own case.

They need to look into prosecuting the ppl that made the initial rulings in this situation.

there was no case the DA was'nt going to chrage anyone. he played the noose incident as just a silly prank and told them not to make a big deal about it.

Those that were trying to make a statement in the right way that would get media attention were damaged by the other 6 acting like thugs.

My understanding of that was the principal for the school recommended expulsion, but the school board overturned it and give the three students who hung the nooses 3 day in-school suspension.

I got 3 day in-school suspension once in HS for wearing a t-shirt a teacher deemed offensive and all it said was '*****' in reference to our crosstown rivals whose mascot is the Wildcats. :whatever:

Actually there was, the DA decided to sweep it under the rug. The three that did it, admitted to it.

Racial tension in this country will last for a very, very long time...I'm kinda glad that people are aware that things like this are still happening in this country...It will motivate others to see the errors of these actions and beliefs. Hopefully at least the violence will end someday.

I saw a programma about the story on the BBC. Jena in Louisiana is still really segregated. There is no signs saying whites only or no coloureds but the residents still seem to have some sort of unspoken rule that this part of town is for white people and this part for black.

Until both sides mix and break down this racial barrier the town will continue in a cycle of racism.

I know people will be like, this was an isolated incident, etc. But racism still exists in this country, and no, I don't mean the "black racism against whites" that so many people like to throw at me.
