It takes a special someone to turn gold to turd.

- do not release photo out of wussy political correctness
- gives OBL a proper burial out of wussy political correctness (even when they hate you regardless), and nevermind what he has done

Yes, protecting American lives, particularly American troops, by not giving al-Qaeda a recruiting tool and a martyrdom rallying cry is sure wussy.

No comment on your other points, I will admit.

Yes killing OBL, isn't going to anger them at all into furious rage. Giving him an Islamic burial is a wimpy move.

If you want to talk about protecting American lives, you go the opposite end. Bury him in a pile of pig corpses. Now that is a real deterrent. Every single terrorist that even tries will know there will be prospects of a pig burial; they don't get to go to paradise. And this has been done before in history and has work. Hell the Russians have done it.

It's actually a pretty weak reaction worldwide from what I've seen....

Other than Pakistan....not much else.

Personally I was (and still) more angry than celebratory. It took 10 years and a trillion, and so many troops dead and crippled... and Osama was just chilling out at Pakistan's own West Point the entire time. All the while funneling billions to Pakistan.

It is a monumental and unacceptable failure. The CIA to the Pentagon, to all levels of intelligence and diplomacy... just a gigantic cluster**** up. And here we are still going to continue in Afghanistan and ramping up crap like the Patriot Act, and the TSA. The price was far too high and long.

I am a pragmatic, progressive liberal.

I see no rightwing slant to this thread. I see some intelligent discussion peppered with some silliness.

What I occasionally see (from the right and from the left) are posters spouting conspiracy theories, criticizing Obama's role, judging the morality of taking Osama out, etc.

And ya know what, in every discussion on the internet on this subject.....all of those people are there as well, it goes with the territory. It just happens naturally...

A pragmatic, progressive liberal.....that is almost an oxymoron....lol I love it....

They call me an oxymoron because for the most part, I'm a war hating, pro-choice, independent fiscal conservative, figure that one out.

Would it be too extreme to just ban conspiracy theories in this thread (the "Osama has been on ice for years" stuff, or "Osama is still alive")? Conspiracy theories wouldn't fly in the 9/11 thread. So I don't see how this is much different. When one of those idiots pop their heads in it always derails the thread for 3 or 4 pages.

i have no problem with that but i think that was a MISSION to kill HIM NOT to consider any chance to take him alive...if you going for a KILL MISSION you dont care much about weapons or not...

From Panetta himself: Panetta underscored on Tuesday that Obama had given permission to kill the terror leader: "The authority here was to kill bin Laden," he said. "And obviously, under the rules of engagement, if he had in fact thrown up his hands, surrendered and didn't appear to be representing any kind of threat, then they were to capture him. But they had full authority to kill him."

And also here: Asked about the final confrontation with bin Laden, Panetta said: "I don't think he had a lot of time to say anything." The CIA chief told PBS NewsHour, "It was a firefight going up that compound. ... I think it - this was all split-second action on the part of the SEALs."

Panetta said that bin Laden made "some threatening moves that were made that clearly represented a clear threat to our guys. And that's the reason they fired."

Thread manager strikes...

Well damn it, I'm reposting my post then....

hang on ...

Taking OBL alive would have been a security risk. There would have been so many threats to carry out attacks unless OBL was released. That is the reason I believe he was killed.

A new poll for a new thread. There has been some debate recently about the 'legality' of Bin Laden's assassination. What do you think? Please be sure to vote in the poll above!

I am so confused now....I have no idea where I am posting...

Now, I thought we were getting along well. Why the slam?

I'm progressive in terms of social issues. I'm pragmatic in the sense I'm a realist in foreign policy matters and realize we have to get our hands dirty once in a while. I'm no Michael Moore (and despise the man) if that's what you're thinking.

I think you are spot on about that. There was no prison that could hold someone like him either.

I tend to agree.

Yet killing him created Osama bin Laden the martyr and as a martyr he is far more powerful than he was when he was stuck in his mansion.

Osama Bin Laden lost a lot of the influence he once had. I don't think he's being seen as a martyr to very many.

Would you prefer sodomizing the corpse on live tv and then dumping it into the East River? Proper burial is the high road, something Bin Laden and his cronies knew nothing about. If you think that's wimpy then I feel a little sorry for you.
Buried in pig corpse to deny him paradise and to deter future terrorists - knowing they too will be denied paradise. Done before in history as well and has worked.

There is no high road in this thing. The man was assassinated. And the people who celebrates in jubilation (and they have every right to) like it is some sports team winning... incendiary concerns of image went out the window then and there. So why waste your breath on high road and political correctness?

Wuss, wimp and ridiculous. Even the Muslim Imams were complaining about dumping it in sea; it only applies burials on boats or something. So even if you apply your logic of high road, the application fails regardless.

Would ou really expect Al-Qaeda to say anything different!?

Yeah. What Al Qaeda won't tell you is that they've lost their main fundraiser. That is a huge blow, no matter how much they want to spin it.

UM, as far as the poll, I don't see it as an assasination, so I can't really vote.....
