Welcome to the science thread. I think this mainly should be for articles about breakthrough technologies that could change the world as we know it. Post an article that you have come across and we can discuss what this could me for the world and how it could change society.

I'll start it off.

http://www.rense.com/general61/naneo.htm

This is an incredible advancement in the engery field. Here's hoping Big Oil doesn't try to destroy it. I personally believe energy should be free. This seems like a step in the right direction. The fact about the Sun and the energy we use is just mindblowing. We really NEED to invest in solar energy.

I really hope this interesting to someone around here because this is huge. Nanotechnology is going to dramatically change the future.

Awesomeness!!This could make solar energy much cheaper.(Its price is the main thing that prevents it from happening.)

OMG!!The storage capacity of that computer will be vulgar:up:

I just had a movie idea! The computers mutate and battle with humanity,as opposed to the typical robots vs humans.

You are kidding me right?

Big Oil is just as much involved in the alternative field as anybody else. They know that the age of oil will end and it won't be because we've run out of oil.

You still need to heat your home and drive your car and solar power are not good choices in these fields. At most, if you solar powered your car, you'd only generate enough power to run the car radio. Whatever replaces oil still needs to be delivered to a station where consumers can access it easily and that's where Big Oil still comes in.

Although I'm glad that solar power is getting cheaper and more affordable all the time, it's still not there where you can power your home completely yet, not if you live in the city, though it is getting better.

I think your comment on big oil is somewhat misplaced, because even if they were still run out of business, whatever replaced them would become the new big ___ and hated by those who hate large companies.

DNA Computers.

OMG!! This one is amazing! A million ideas for a movie just flew through my head.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/02/0224_030224_DNAcomputer_2.html

I've read up on DNA computers and it's interesting stuff. I hope that scientists can eventually figure out how it works, which they don't yet. They only know it works.

I read about an experiment where they created a bus route that had seven stops and the DNA computer had to figure out a route that would only touch each station once, but was still the shortest route. At the time I read about it, a standard computer was supposed to take a week or so to figure out. However, the DNA computer figured it out in only a few minutes.

Lol. Mr. Energy expert. The technology is rapid improving. This nano-spray can be used in virtually ANYTHING...paints. You could paint your car with nano spray and it could be charging it as it sits outside and absorbs heat. The possibilites are really endless. There are so many great ideas that even you, Mr. Energy expert, don't know about. And yes, I don't like the big oil companies, mainly because they hold a tight grip around the economic, political and social spectrum of the world. Call me crazy. Anyway, this ain't a politcal thread.

Pretty sweeet!

At the moment, you could spray paint the hood, tires, seats, dashboard, steering wheel, drivers, and passangers and you still aren't generating enough power to free yourself of having the need for fuel.

I'm not trying to make this political, but you started it with your big oil comment and I'm only saying that if you ran the oil companies into the ground, whatever replaced them would become the new Big Oil, even if not in name.

It still doesn't remove the

This is a good idea for my country. As we are in the caribbean,it will be extremely viable, due to our large amounts of sunlight.I really hope my government gets wind of this, cause when oil is done(we are an oil exporting country) we are screwed!

On the positive side, you'll have that much more time to work on your tan.

Well, I think oil will delay any progress in this technology as much as possible. I dunno, I just think energy should be free. This feels like a step in the right direction.

HAAH!Im tan enough though.As in permanantly lol:D

Unless you're as dark as midnight on your eyeballs, you've got room for improvement.

Energy is free, if you're willing to spend your time, effort, and energy to create it, which is really the problem. Most people aren't willing to do what it takes to grow their own corn and create their own ethanol or diesel.

If you're willing to learn how, you can easily create your own hydrogen too. But it likely means your time on SHH is done if you're going to go that route.

i prefer the one thread for each new news story of intrest way myself. otherwise intresting stuff gets lost in a sea of comments about other stuff.

jonty is correct in some regards. if they stiffle competition and jack their prices it will annoy people. they wont nessersarily do this tho. since they don't have a finite resource to get the most money out of. it'd work more like the computer industry where competition is rife and power doubles every 18 months. with prices contant. since they can always increase the efficiancy of the panels. more efficency equals more usable power. it takes multiple renewable energy sources to be used tho. cars can run on vegetable oil or methanol. which in turn requires greater gains in farming from smaller amounts of land so we don't have to destroy more habitate to provide for both cars and people. GM crops could help. but then they could swiftly change some ecosystems. i think the west over produces on some food as it is and if growing car crop is more monitarily benificial to them than producing food no one will eat then they will grow that crop. that just leaves electricity demands. with can be met with newer technologies. in fact there's many technologies that we are waiting to find out if they can be used in practice. petrol had the advantage of not having millions of people waiting for it. it's introduction created a market of it's own. the big switch over was never going to be easy. and it will never seem like the right time to switch. things need to be fazed in gradually right now. too slow for my liking but this is the way of the world.

also we know how DNA computers work. the whole idea was designed to work based on what we know of the properties of DNA. basically it's a system of xtreme parallelisation. it calculates all the possiblilities at once. the best solution is then easily picked from those possibilities. especially in a node problem.

It's also a case that the benefits of specialization is just too much for society to give up. If we were to go the generalized route, where everybody lives off the land and does everything themselves, such societies tend to be very poor, brutish, and short-lived. It's why we don't live in that society today and why more generalized (primitive) societies are trying to become like us.

Whereas, societies that become more specialized allow individuals to focus their contributions in very small areas with the overall totaled effect becomes fairly large. It's also the kind of society that allow companies to become large, because specialized societies also tend to be stable economies.

We might know the process, but it's still skimming the surface on why it works. The amount of actual knowledge we have in this area, compared with the knowledge that we need to really understand it, at least publicly, is very small.
