probably don’t have to tell you that it’s been hot this week—almost every state in the country reported a high temperature above 90°F somewhere within its borders yesterday. And as we all know, oppressive heat means oppressive energy consumption, a vicious cycle that perpetuates the effects of global warming. New York City’s power company, Con Edison, reported all-time usage records earlier this week as people remained indoors with their air conditioning cranked, causing scattered blackouts across the city (our managing editor has been without power for three days). But what if our air conditioners were able to harness some of the sun’s wicked heat and turn it into the life-saving cool air on which our comfort depends? Florida-based Matteran Energy might be able to help us do just that.

Instead of using expensive photovoltaic cells to convert solar radiation to electricity directly, Matteran’s solution uses far-cheaper thermal-collection technology to heat a synthetic fluid with a very low boiling point (around 58°F), creating enough steam to drive a specially designed turbine. And although a fluid-circuit system converting heat into electricity is nothing new, Matteran’s innovative solution increases the system’s efficiency to a point where small-scale applications make economic sense (see the animation on the company’s Web site for a more thorough explanation).

So far, Matteran has created only small amounts of refrigeration, but the technology is in place to take the next step, creating a unit with the equivalent cooling of a standard window-mounted A/C that is powered entirely by the sun’s heat—something I don’t think our carbon-choked planet will be running out of anytime soon. —John Mahoney

I think we've seen a lot of holding back on alternate energy resources such as this, thanks to the big utilty and oil companies lobbying the government and buying out these technologies and burying them. Between this and that vid of the guy who's figured out how to make a combustion engine run on plain old tap water, I hope we're seeing the start of a new trend in energy-efficient technologies starting to emerge.

omg this is gonna change the world!!! /sarcasm

hahah I laugh at you silly planeteers, keep dreaming!

Haven't you been shipped out to the Middle East, yet?

dude once the government finds out about that it's gonna disappear like the electric car, the water powered combustion engine, and Ben Affleck's career....

i work a half mile away form one of the area's that's been without power all this time. it's insanity. Con Ed are crooks.

this stuff sounds really promising, thanks for posting it:up:

I've been clicking on your link all day and it doesn't work.

this sounds good ..i just hope it actually comes to fruition..

Damn. :(

I scrolled down so fast, I thought this said "Fascinating Solar-Powered Bikini".

I don't get you:confused:

You seem to want constant war and people to die:confused:

It's not even to serve a noble end, like most conservatives say on here:confused:

i miss Strike Hard:(

He and Fred made quite a duo.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! "declarative" hahahahahahhahaha
I remember the "I kill you soooo much" image. that one was awesome!

dude, not all the time.

Yes, all the time:confused:

I mean, I know you've been taught to smile as you kill and everything, but can't you at least fake a sombre look on your face?

I hope this is developed further. I'm sick of making Earth cry. :(

Does that really happen? I'm shocked that such a dastardly, greedy act actually happens.

Yep, thats half my training. You know a lot about the military! /sarcasm

That is pretty cool and interesting. The other big break through to happen in solar energy was that Canadian researcher who discovered a way to make solar panels pliable, so they could be molded to a certain shape. He also made them 33% more efficient by being able to collect heat energy along with light energy. Sorry I don't have a link off the top of my head to go into more detail, but I'm sure if you do a wiki or google search it'll come up.

I don't know why you'd be shocked, but yeah...it happens quite a bit, actually.

Ok, maybe I'm more disgusted than shocked. Oil really is the devil.
