It Looks Like CONAN Has A Director!

(...) there's an e-mail from a spy who makes a very persuasive case that there is indeed a director onboard now for the CONAN project that Lionsgate has been developing.

And if this is true, then my interest level just went through the floor. That’s sort of incredible, too, because I’m a full-blown CONAN freak. When I met Howard McCain after the screening of OUTLANDER, he told me he’d just been hired with his writing partner to write CONAN for Lionsgate, and in talking with him, I could tell the material was in the right hands. He genuinely adores the Robert Howard stories, and it seemed like he had some big plans for how to structure the film.

And let’s be clear... stop calling this a remake. They’re not doing the Milius film. They’re starting over from the original stories. So it’s relly wrong to call this thing a remake at all. You won’t be seeing the same story or even the same supporting characters. This is ground zero.

And now it appears to be official that Brett Ratner is directing the goddamn thing.

Oh, Brett... why do you want to hurt me? Why do you want to make this movie? Please, please, please tell me it’s because you have a genuine passion for the material and not just because it’s a start date and a financing package that’s ready to go. Please tell me that you really care about the character and its history, and not that it’s just “Hey, I recognize that name.”

I’d love to be wrong about this. I don’t think Ratner’s a terrible shooter, and maybe this script is bulletproof.

I’d love to find out. Hint. Hint. Anyone who felt like putting a copy in my hands should feel free to do so.

In the meantime, I’m going to do my best to keep positive and pray that this is a good thing for the material and not a death sentence. I believe in CONAN... and I hope like hell that Ratner does, too.

Do they have a Conan star yet? I still think it should be HHH if they haven't.

It would take an exceptional director to match the first Conan movie and they get Ratner.

what a joke.

The Rat to direct Conan?.......this Movie is doomed.

Ratner couldn't direct my arse to sit squarly on the toilet.

GIMP!

Having said that, I think he's awesome and this film will rock.

One of the few times I'd cast a WWE wrestler in anything. He looks exactly like Conan and he showed he could play a Schwarzenegger/Stallone type in Blade Trinity.

Triple H sucked in blade trinity. (no pun intended)

hardly enough charisma to carry a franchise.

I wouldn't call what Sylvester Stallone has charisma, but he's carried two franchises.

If Ratner's on board then it's definately not good news for the new movie. Quite frankly, I'm bored of listing the fault's Inherent with Mr Ratner - luckilly everyone who comes one here is clued up as to his hackiness so I don't have to cause my fingers any unnecessary pain in listing them.

Anyway, I honestly never understood the HHH as Conan thing; I grew up with the Buscema Conan (y'know - the black hair and dark tan) - on that basis, if a wrestler did have to be cast - wouldnt Dwayne Johnson be a better fit as looks wise, charisma wise and acting wise, he trumps HHH any day of the week.

add this to the list of why they hell did they pick Ratner first God of War now Conan

Because Ratner isn't so much an auteur as he is a hack 'yes-man' director who will pander to a studios every whim and make the best commercially sound movie possible.

Commercially sound yet instantly forgettable by-the-numbers fare.

Hollywood has gone mad! First he gets GOW, now CONAN. wtf

Rat must have something on these producers.

Well if Ratner does end up directing Conan it will be another film I will avoid.

Seriously we know he's going to **** up God of War and he'll definitely **** up Conan. :(

*sigh* Brett "I think the TDK version of The Joker should have his own spin-off and should be played by Robert Downey Jr." Ratner.:cmad:

I think Brett may have been on to something there! You take a $500M movie and mesh it together with a $300M movie and it can only succeed, both artistically and economically, right?

:hehe:

Ratner actually said that? :wow:

Wow, my estimation of him just went down even further; I wouldn't have thought that was possible.

Give this man the boobies prize:woot:

That pretty much sums it up and gives you an idea of what level of movie they are aiming for.

If it's true, then I will probably avoid this film. Ratner had the chance with X-Men 3 to do some epic material. He floundered. I highly doubt that the script, however solid, will survive his involvement.

Cause the original CONAN...wow...hell of a character piece.

Sigh...

And it's Brett Ratner's fault X3 had subpar elements, right?

Here we go again.

Conan was never about "art" in his movie and TV incarnations. Ratner is just the right choice.

Like Moriarty said in his review, we have no clue what this new version is like. You can't say that a pedestrian vision is okay because it's a remake of action fare, as the script is not a remake and may not have the same tone.

I've seen way too many X-Men 3 debates to delve into this too much, but in the commentary he mentions quite a few times that he had control over the aesthetic and script changes. He's definitely not the only reason, but he didn't do much to make it better. I haven't seen any signs in any of his other films- X-Men 3 included- that he's the right choice for this one.
