CBS) YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Paul Bracamontes, a 22-year-old California man who was fatally shot after allegedly breaking into a home early Sunday, was said to be hallucinating at a party earlier in the night and was heard making several comments regarding "zombies" and wanting a gun, reports CBS Los Angeles.
Authorities responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in Yorba Linda, an upscale neighborhood in Orange County, around 3:15 a.m. Sunday.
"The female informant stated that her husband had a male subject at gunpoint," said Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Upon arriving on scene, deputies found Bracamontes, of Fullerton, dead from a gunshot wound.
"The subsequent investigation revealed that the adult male and female homeowners were awakened to the sound of Bracamontes yelling and screaming in the backyard of the residence," Lt. Hallock said.
Bracamontes allegedly threatened the couple, broke a rear sliding glass door and entered the home, officials said, reports the station.
The suspect was reportedly shot after making entry into the home.
"Both the male and female homeowners have indicated they did not know Bracamontes and had never seen him before," said Lt. Hallock.
The homeowners were questioned and released by authorities.
Bracamontes' relatives later told police that he was hallucinating at a party earlier in the night and was heard making comments regarding "zombies" and wanting a gun.
It was unclear if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of his death.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at (714) 647-7000.
