Okay, I'm new to the comics but not new to Spiderman.
I've been collecting everything Spidey under the sun since i was a Kid but I never got into the comics due to the fear of $$$ and being overwhelmed by there being SO much out there.
Finally have a job that could support this new hobby, and went to my local comic store and got on the "list" for every Spidey comic each month.

However, in order to understand what the hell is going on, I need to know which back orders to pick up and read.
Unfortunately there's so much out there and I have been reading and searching on this site and others but am still confused.

Amazing Spiderman is now on issue # 533, and this seems to be the main storyline. I obviously will spend a fortune collecting all 533, but I have to start somewhere.

Ultimate Spiderman is currently around # 96? And these present Amazing Spiderman with a more modern twist?

Spectacular Spiderman is what and how many issues are there? Same for "Spiderman loves Mary Jane."

And what about things that I remember like Web of Spiderman, Maximum Carnage, etc . . .

I'm so anxious to jump in and can't wait to ge to the comic book store tomorrow, but would love to know exactly where was the best place to start.

I'm online tongiht (Wednesday,) and my sn is boysetsfire24 if anyone is using AIM and would like to talk some comics.

Thanks for any feedback!
Sam.

Okay, ASM, is pretty easy to jump on right now, Its currently connected with a large company crossover called Civil War, however if you don't feel like reading the main storyline, just pick up 529 onwards and it should be p
pretty easy to understand.

All the old issues, are avalible in many forms, however if you want an affordable version, try the ASM 500 issue collection, with has all 500 issues on discs, or hell find a guy named Donald Thomas around here and check out his site, which is updated monthly and has all the ASM's as well. If your not into computer comics (I'm not) check out the Spider-Man essentials, which have almost the first 200 Spider Man comics(In black and white) for about $10 a volume (around 25-30 comic books each). Recent storylines have been released in tpb form as well, however if you happen to see "The Other" on the shelf, avoid it like the plague

Ultimate is excellent right now, there are currently 15 volumes of Ultimate, it is an alternate universe, where essentially Peter Parker got his powers in this century. The Ultimate Universe has become almost as important as the mainstream Marvel Universe, thanks to its quality storylines, writers and characters. As well in the Ultimate Universe, Peter ages about one year for every hundred issues, and while many familiar faces are seen in Ultimate, there are some changes that may suprise you if you choose to read it

Spectacular is dead finishing with issue 27, however two new titles have been created in its abscence. Sensational Spider-Man (formally Marvel Knights Spider-Man) with 27 issues, which is by far the superior title, storywise and artwise, and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man with 9 issues. Both have connections to Amazing and change according to current storylines, however they have seperate arcs with few crossovers.

Spider-Man loves Mary Jane, is more centered around an alternate universe version of Mary Jane, however I don't read it, so maybe someone else can comment on it. Spider-Girl another alternate Universe title, involving Peter's daughter is near perfect quality wise, however it is set to be cancelled at issue 100, with a possible reboot in the fall.
