I'm unclear on when Batman became aware of Catwoman's secret identity in modern continuity--it's been that way for a while now, but I recall that he didn't know her identity during Knightfall. Can somebody tell me when and how it happened?

I'm sure it happened just before 52, I think it was in those pre 52 Batman series that featured after! 52 was done.

But then I vaguely remember him taking off his mask in " Hush"....

Early in the Brubaker run maybe?

No, Bruce and the gang were already aware of her identity in the Officer Down storyline.

Bruce & Co may have learned about it after Catwoman was arrested in her own series (the first one). The police wasn't able to figure out her identity, but Batman being Batman, he could have learned it nonetheless, and decided to not reveal it to Gordon because of his own views about Selina.

I seem to recall that Bruce knew her identity when he enlisted her to steal some records during No Man's Land--but I'd have to double check. I'm not sure if that fell before or after the arrest you're talking about.

wow, its weird, im surprised someone doesnt have a pretty clear answer on this....

I suppose it was when she was caught and put on prison.

well, when was the first time batman encountered catowman in modern continuity? year one, i'd presume. so where did the characters go after that?

Well, there is no clear indication that he knew at that point, but you may be right. After all, his guesses about 'who is Selina Kyle' (Selina Kyle was thought to have been murdered in New York by Catwoman) lacked the fairly obvious 'Selina Kyle is Catwoman', so maybe that he just wanted to ease Oracle's suspicions while not endangering Selina?

Honestly, it's been a while since I've read it; I'm probably just misremembering things.

I'm not familiar with that story.
