Changes being made to MPAA rating system...again

Not prompted by it my foot.

Good to see documentaries actually making a difference. "Super Size Me" comes to mind.

I'm all for the MPAA allowing filmmakers a reasonable chance to dispute the rating decisions; although I'm concerned about the possibility of the "rules" getting too lenient. Sex-crazed, very violent, and/or other disturbing films squeak by with a PG-13, when cleary they should get an R. In that respect, I hope the MPAA omits the slack, so they can keep certain materials away from the public, rather than endorsing them by approving the film(s).

This is what we have...

G
PG
PG-13
R
NC-17

This is what we need...

G
PG
PG-13
R-15
R
NC-17

As you can see, R-15 would be the new and lone new rating. It would actually be juts a light or maybe even medium R. Look at The Punisher (Thomas Jane version) I thought it was a light R. Saw is another example of Light R. Not a lot of blood...but it does have tension. Personally, I think a 15 year old can handle Saw. Saw III would be NC-17, but MPPA thought otherwise and gaved it an R.

i agree with that. movies with a lot of profanity, but no violence, don't need an R rating. i think most 15-16 year olds can handle a few F bombs and a little violence here and there. as an example: why the hell did V for Vendetta get an R? or the matrix movies? that's just stupid.

R ratings need to be applied to movies with a lot of violence/gore and gratuitous nudity.

I hope they fix my one pet peeve: I don't believe strong language used in the context of comedy should be reason enough to propel a movie from PG-13 to R. Movies like Clerks 2 have no graphic sex scenes (every act of intercourse happened off-camera) and no violence, but receive ratings as high as R simply because of language. Things like that didn't happen back before PG-13 was invented. Just look at some of Mel Brooks' older movies; his characters used some damn foul language, but the movies usually ended rated PG. That's the rating we use for childrens' movies today.

i hope the MPAA gets stomped on thanks to that documentary.

Honestly, let's say Pan's Labyrinth (which was Rated R here) should be a Rated 15. It has some gross moments, but in the end, they're harmless. Not to the point where it can cause damage to the public.

oh oh..another example is the Sam Raimi classic, Army of Darkness. The theaterical version was a Rated R, and that sucker was the less bloody of the the Evil Dead Trilogy.

Still, to this very day, I never understood why it got an R. There were maybe two since with blood, and they were used for comedy.

Yeah, that should really have been a PG-13. Not a lot of language and blood from what I remember. Although it did have a shot of a flying monster...that didn't have a shirt on.

Please God no not R-15...... the last thing I need is a bunch of dip **** high school kids who never shut up being allowed into the movie they tried to sneak into. :csad:

hmmm, bias aside, I've always felt that the British Certification system has always been better:

Uc - Universal Films for kids only, adults wont enjoy
U - Universal - suitable for all ages
PG - Parental Guidance anyone can see this movie too, although its recommended young children are accompanied by an adult
12 - Not suitable for anyone under 12 *the brits can thank batman 89 for this* Spider-Man 1 was given this rating too
12A - children under 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult
15 - Not suitable for anyone under 15 . *none of that pg-13 oddness, allowing films to be gritty and still make money*
18 - Not suitable for anyone under age 18
R - In Britain, R means "Restricted" as in hardcore pornography sold from licensed sex shops only. *apparently ;)*

the certificates PG,12, 12A and 15 really clear up the whole PG-13 mess.....

couldnt have said it any better

Its just good how it is. It's simple. We dn't need a million ratings for all the movies. Plus like someone said i don'r want a damn 13 old or so who doesn't shut the F**k up during a movie!

I've actually heard F**k during a PG movie once!!! I think that movie was Big, but I'm not completely sure- now a days say F**k once and that one F**k gets you a PG-13 rating... so, yeah in terms of F**k the ratings have definitely changed alot since back then because a PG movie said F**k.

This post is rated R. <- that's my attempt at sarcasm. Glad to see the MPAA finally being more lenient again.

Jeez god is that complicated. We need a guide for that. 12 and 12A?? :wow:

I think our system itself is fine in print, but the procedure is seriously fubar. That's what needs to be addressed.

Its just a movie rating.

The only change I think should be made is PG-13 should be PG-15.

Why PG-15? What'd be the difference?

But we wouldn't need PG-15 if we'd just raise the standards for PG movies. As it stands, PG is being used for kiddie movies.

I think I heard the F-word in Footloose and that was rated PG.
