so anyone had to do this yet, im running out of space already and considering it. any recommendations on which hdd to use

I did this around XMAS time. it's fairly straightforward. just may take a bit to get the top cover off. and make sure you have the correct, most recent firmware file saved to your USB stick.

Also, I think you need to download the full firmware for a fresh update to the USB stick, and not just the update file.

On this page, there is a link to download the latest firmware update. Click that link, and then scroll down to the section "Perform a New Installation of the System Software"

and this is the 1TB hdd I used:

so anything similar to that should suffice. I've heard not so good things about the Seagate brand from other posters here. So, that's why I went with WD.
