BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Production is now underway in the UK on the action adventure “Heart of the Sea.” Oscar® winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) and Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling novel about the dramatic true journey of the whaling ship Essex. The film is a co-production between COTT Productions and Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.

“Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (Marvel’s “The Avengers,” upcoming “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The film also stars Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn theEssex of what may lie ahead.

“Heart of the Sea” is produced by Paula Weinstein (“Blood Diamond”), Joe Roth (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), William Ward, Brian Grazer (“J. Edgar”) and Ron Howard. Serving as executive producers are Sarah Bradshaw, Palak Patel and Bruce Berman. William M. Connor is co-producer. The film is based on the novel In the Heart of the Sea, by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Production, which began September 10th, will shoot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Herfordshire, UK, and on location in the Canary Islands.
“Heart of the Sea” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a COTT Productions-Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. co-production, a Roth Films/Spring Creek/Imagine Entertainment Production. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

So basically this is about the creation of Moby Dick which is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of literature.

Some shoddy, obviously unfinished CG shots aside, this looks really good. I'd love to know what that piano piece is, haunting. Chris looks really intense here.

I had no idea this movie was a thing until now... nor that Moby Dick was based on/inspired by real events. So I'm a little behind.

I don't know whether I'll see it... "lurking beneath the water" movies tend to actually get me really nervous. I've have a thing about large bodies of water. So water + monster gets me. But, that's also what makes them so fun to watch. So if it's well reviewed, maybe.

Looks really good, in fact it looks like it should be coming out nowish as it certainly looks like an oscar bait type of film.

Also that is one large whale

Ehh, I don't know how can I care about bunch of whale killers...

Looks like a slicker, more commercial version of BBC/Discovery's "The Whale", which came out last December.

Yes, how can you possibly care about the suffering of humans who were doing what the times they lived in demanded of them?

You do realize that the world ran on whale oil at one time. Even your ancestors used it. It was sad but thats how it was.

Also the island these men were from was a whaling island. Whaling was the one and only real career for the men, and it was the only thing that supported the town's economy. Most importantly it was the only thing that kept food on their table. So before you dismiss these people and the horrors they faced perhaps you should put their career in the context of the times they lived in. Might help too if you remembered that these were real people with real families. They werent just "a bunch of whale killers."

Didn't know this film was even being made. The look of it is pretty interesting in that it reminds of old paintings.

Fur is murder. :o

I didn't even know this movie existed until this morning. I watched a documentary on Discovery about this when I was a kid, then read the book the movie is named after.

this movie will have good acting and a good story. the team is good.

but the colors. the coloooooooors. the green and yellow look is disgusting

Matter of taste, I think it looks pretty damn good visually.

Finally, the first Ron Howard film I'm actually looking forward to. This is my kind of movie so hopefully this turns out to be great.

Looks different from a typical Ron Howard movie. More gritty.

That poster is fantastic, and actually kind of eerie.

The whale isn't that big in the movie.

Based on the trailer doesn't look like a giant white sperm whale either.
