No, this is not in the wrong forum, off topic, or any of that.

I just saw Cloverfield for the first time yesterday, and the first thought i had was "they ripped this off of Watchmen".

I mean think about it. I think whoever made that movie has to have read Watchmen and wondered "what happens next" and that's where they got the movie. I know it's a take on Godzilla from the individual's perspective in a way, but bear with me.

If you've read Watchmen and seen Cloverfield, tell me, isn't it like a perfect epilogue to the graphic novel? This is what happens when people die b/c of a giant squid monster. the US can't stop it, and the next step will be the world uniting against this "alien force" - although in Cloverfield it actually is alien i guess since you see that egg fall into the water at the end.

what do you think? :applaud

I don't agree with your opinion. I mean, you have some valid points, but I don't agree.

And, just so you know, that object falling wasn't an egg, but a satellite, which woke up the monster (who was sleeping in the ocean)

lol. a satellite? is that in the extras or something? seems funny that undersea earthquakes over the years don't wake him but a tiny little satellite does. weird.

couldn't you picture it being "what happens next" though? i'd like to hear the writer comment on if he's seen watchmen. maybe it was indirect. maybe i'm crazy, but i enjoyed it more than i think i would have because i was picturing Ozymandias being to blame.

I think theres certainly things its referencing more than watchmen.
I just dont really see how its referencing watchmen at all tbh.

When do you see this satellite in the movie? Sounds quite interesting, dont think i noticed it when i saw it.

...No. As you said, more Godzilla influenced than anything. For some reason I doubt the film makers have read the Watchmen. If they have, I highly doubt it was in anyway tied to their ideas for Cloverfield.

This is one of the stranges movie comparisons I've ever seen.
While I can, vaguely, understand where you got the idea, I really don't see it holding any water.
At all.

Ummm...you know the squid at the end of Watchmen was killed almost immediately after it was teleported to NYC right?

It didn't rampage...at all. It was teleported, died, and killed half of NYC. That's it.

There's absolutely no comparison to Cloverfield, where the monster actually rampaged NYC.

Someone asked the director and that's what he said. And apparently the monster was just a baby.

:facepalm

Abrams wanted the U.S. to have it's own monster. That's all there is to it.

come on - NO comparison to a giant squid destroying new york? which one was i just describing? right. :woot: there is definitely a comparison, just maybe not a connection. i'm just havin a little fun with my imagination.

and YES i know the Watchmen squid was DOA. i've read the GN thrice. but the effect (giant squid destroying city) and the outcome (people's fear of unknown) are very similar.

also, i'm pretty sure the Joker said ten.

and i repeat: of course i know it was DOA. but seriously NO comparison? maybe no connection but there is easily a comparison.

Cloverfield:
giant squid
new york destroyed
people fear unknown

Watchmen:
giant squid
new york destroyed
people fear unknown

details are drastically different, but that's where i saw a similarity.

Cloverfield's monster isn't even a squid.. lol

could be the best response yet! it was kind of a platypus in that it combines a number of animals. like it's arms are very similar to a bats. but it DID have at least part squid as jason found out at the bridge. lol.

this is fun. hope i'm not ticking people off, just think it's interesting when you see similarities from such different places.

Oh my god, there was a monster and the people feared it! Wait.. that's it. Those are all the similarities and they are pretty superficial. Of course people will fear something they don't know, especially if it's a monster-type creature. The point of Cloverfield was to see the reaction to a real monster from a single person's viewpoint, Watchmen was about one man's insane plan to unite the world against a perceived alien threat by creating a fake monster. Cloverfield didn't show nor even hint at anything like that. It was just a monster movie.

But man, the "similarities" you're seeing are either so commonplace as to be completely inconsequential (new york attacked, people fearing something, etc), or they aren't even there at all (the "they're both squids" argument being a prime example). It's complete nonsense. You're looking for connections where there are none. It's ridiculously pointless.

to be fair, i wasn't looking for them, it just occurred to me while i was watching. obviously they have very different setups (as someone mentioned there's no indication at all of someone intending this in cloverfield).

i think my original point has been missed by fanboys worrying that i'm bashing one or the other by comparing. wasn't trying to intimate that they were in any way the same, just a fun "what if" that's how watchmen continued.

blah. i'll just let it go.

also, to whoever asked, you see the satellite/egg whatever at the last scene right on the horizon (tiny tiny tiny) in the background it hits the water.

Also, Cloverfield wasn't a squid. At all.

Just because it came from water and had a few extra sets of legs doesn't make it a squid.

Hey guys i noticed another similarity between the movies. In Cloverfield, the main guy has a girlfriend, and in Watchmen, there's also a guy who has a girlfriend. Coincidence?!?!? I THINK NOT!!!
