where did this term come from? and what exactly does it mean, my understanding is that if something is comic cannon its a fact, is this true?

I wouldn't say that it is "fact" but more like accepted as continuity. Something that wouldn't be canon (I think that's how they spell it) wouldn't be accepted as ever happening in the comic. For instance, comic book movies and cartoons don't seem to be canon because whatever happens in them doesn't affect the comics nor are the affects ever mentioned in them. It's best that continuity be kept to the books because then there aren't conflicts constantly circulating. It would be kind of cool if the movies were canon, because that would mean that they couldn't screw up characters or their storylines like they've been doing for the last few films. :venom:

It's not "cannon" as in a long-range artillery weapon, but "canon", as in an officially recognized literary work.

Such as Biblical Canon is the series of books that are officially recognized as being a part of the Bible. Or American Literary Canon is what is officially recognized as classic American literature.

Therefore, comic canon is what has officially been printed in a Marvel Comic in its most basic definition. However, in most usages of canon, it means what has officially happened in mainstream Marvel continuity, meaning Ultimate books are not considered canon, nor are alternate realities such as the What Ifs or 1602.

thanks for the help guys, those were great description, I think I got the a good grasp on comic canon now, thanks

Now what is comic connon? Is that the act of going to a comic convention (or con for short)

"Yeah, we're going comic connon this weekend."

Comic cannon? A cannon that shoots comic books? I know DC and Marvel want more people to read comics, but firing them at people from a cannon is definitly not a good idea.
