This going from Dark Horse to Marvel + a bunch of DH stuff being licensed from Fox... seems like things could get ugly for them.

Ya know, I received the first three omnibus paperbacks of Dark Horse's run of the character for Christmas and was very excited for Vol. 4 to come out later this year.

But vol. 4 has apparently been cancelled very recently, no doubt due to this announcement. So Marvel will probably publish their own versions of the collections now, so that's more than a little annoying.

On the one hand, I found all of the post-Busiek/Nord/Truman/Giorello comics to be very underwhelming. This was the stuff by Brian Wood, Fred Van Lente and Cullen Bunn. The writing seemed to vary between generic superhero comic writing to hokey pastiche. None of those writers seemed to have a solid grasp on the character, and the art was largely awful. So Marvel being able to imbue some new (and better) talent on the title can be cool. Plus, some solid reprints that treat the original Roy Thomas/Barry Windsor-Smith stuff with more respect than how Dark Horse treated it would be very welcome.

On the other hand, I feel bad for Dark Horse because much like with Star Wars, the Conan books were a staple of the publisher. Hopefully they don't lose the rights to the other Robert E. Howard characters and can do some cool stuff with the likes of Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn.

I fully expect Marvel to buy Dark Horse here soon. I expect Dark Horse to lose their Fox licenses, and then what will they have.

Hellboy is their biggest series but it's creator-owned. They also have Usagi Yojimbo I believe.

I'd say DH should drive a pick-up truck full of cash to Frank Miller's house to get some more Sin City out of him, but present Miller is.... iffy, at best.

Miller did say recently that he had a World War 2 Sin City story in the works, so who knows.

DarkHorse has a bunch of smaller comics that are not part of franchises. They also have video game comics, for some reason. Don't get me wrong, they lost possibly their biggest seller, but that's Star Wars, not Conan. I think Alien is probably a bigger loss if that is indeed gone as well. As it stood, they were, at best, the fourth biggest publisher and they might end up dropping to fifth.

As a big REH fan/collector I'll definitely second that.

I would like to see Mike Grell write Conan.
