So slightly morbid thought, What if COVID is nature's equalizer to fix itself cause we won't do it?

it could be rather be a warning shot. Because like you said it yourself we dont fix what we need to... I guess you know already all that, but need to express it : If we dont change our way of life, this system, we are a wild card speeding into a brick wall : Ecology (Guess that's what you were talking about, among others things ) / New viruses ( yep, maybe you know that they can come hands in hands) , more and more inequalities, more and more people suffering and angry ( and retreating in their own community/ Nation you name it) country ruined ( by economy and wars) more and more migration ( for all those reasons) war (s) looming on the horizon. ps: But you sure know all that already...

Those people like others seen often as "invisibles" ( like the parents at home raising children) MUST be reevaluated after this crisis. They must have the means to work confortably at all time. They say that we are in a war, but ours "soldiers" don't have "weaponry". THEY are the essentials. What we are seing is awful and wrong. For them, and guess what ? For all of us. Strenght and honor to them.

I have a friend in retail and she's tired of the media proclaiming them as these unsung heroes and still be treated like trash because they're sold out of merchandise or ridiculed for wearing a mask and gloves at the register.

I hear him. That's what happening in France too. A lot of them are just bitter that we are treating them as heroes, right now because they have told us for month, that something was wrong in the way they had to work. The majority of our country didn't support them at that time (directly. a lot of people sympathise, but they dont do enough action to change things. ) So now, with this virus, it's even worse.

I would hope (although I'm not too confident it will happen) that when this is all over, there would be a major re-evaluation of how wealth is distributed and how people are paid.

Many workers in grocery stores and other jobs that have still continued during COVID-19 are only the minimum wage. Some other jobs which are all but useless now are paid sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds/ dollars more, and sometimes for doing absolutely nothing. What good are stockbrokers, entertainers or investment bankers at a time like this?

Even real estate moguls - absolutely useless. Yes, that includes people like Trump.

For people able to sew, here's a mask tutorial for one you can make at home.

I personally wouldn't bother doing all that myself as I have a mask if I need to use one, but for those who don't, it might come in useful.

We are of course on the same page. That said, think that we can agree too that culture is also essential . We need culture as people. To emancipate ourself to become aware as citizen. ( So i'm not talking about meaningless crass product entertainement. That i can like. I was raised in that system)

I think the term “hero” is being thrown around too loosely

To be honest, I've been having that horrible thought for a month, especially once we saw how pollution and emissions changed once the isolation order began and how the oil industry has taken a hit. To quote Ian Malcolm, "life...uh finds a way."

Maybe, but many of them are in fact facing danger on a regular basis.

A lot of them are unlikely heroes, or didn't go in expecting to be in that situation, which is common in actual stories of heroism, but I think it's fair to say most essential workers are going above and beyond at the moment.

My partner is a care worker in an elderly residential/nursing/dementia home. She literally is putting her life in danger every day she works to help others.
There are many thousands more in the care and health sector doing the same for very little money.

So, do you want to reconsider your statement?

A hero is someone admired for their courage. To be a chashier in a supermarket at the moment takes courage and i admire them for that. It wasn't something they signed up for, but they are doing it because it needs to be done and it is their job. Healthworkers, police whoever. Yes they are heroes.

938 new deaths in the uk. New cases still levelled off although it will take a few days to make sure. They were higher than yesterday but still lower than sundays high.

I was talking more about the cashier in the supermarket. I wouldn’t exactly put them in the same league as healthcare workers/police/firefighters, etc. Now that being said, they ALL signed up for the work they’re doing. Nobody is forcing them to do anything they don’t want to do...and they’re getting paid for it. Though I think police and firefighters should definitely get paid more than what they’re currently getting.
