Corona and other diseases

A thing that I now thought about and worries me is that the left in America has basically lost every sort of standing to say to conservatives "If you are in x area or y area social distance and stay home as much as possible, the numbers are still going up!"

A few weeks ago it used to be that at least the left was holding up its word on that.

But these recent protests, no matter how justified you may think they are and they probably are, has now basically put the American discourse on COVID19 this way:

Right wingers: No! We shouldn't do all this crap, it's against our freedoms!
Left wingers: Yes you should, the numbers are still going up!
Right wingers: Look at those crowded protests in which you have people speaking without masks, nah, you're full of BS, go back to work!
Left wingers: The protests are for a good cause. The economy is not worth anyone's life.
Right wingers: To us the economy IS worth people's lives as much as your protests are, if you can justify it over something that's important to you I can justify it over something that's important to me!

It doesn't matter if most protestors were wearing masks (which to be honest it's kinda not enough when they're all crowded together anyway), just the very fact that of the viral videos that people have liked a lot like the John Boyega speech one has people speaking without masks is enough for them to point out and say "You're not bothered by him not wearing a mask, so why should I wear one?"

I'm not saying left wingers are wrong, but if it was difficult before to convince right wingers and politicians and businesses all that to keep going by the rules, it's now gonna be practically impossible. The battle is now completely lost.
It's sad.

Yea it’s a little collective insanity to me when I see people just decide the virus doesn’t matter anymore and crowding by the thousands day after day after day.

And not just in the US, but even in London and Berlin. For a man in Minneapolis.

“ItS fOr JuStIcE”

Yea, that’s cute. And if it creates a huge second surge all over the place, I hope that’ll keep you warm and fuzzy :whatever:

That John Boyega thing annoys me a little bit, not because of the message but the fact that he isn't wearing a mask. His message is important, and I want him to speak it, I want him to scream it out... but I don't want him without a mask, in front of a lot of crowded people, basically unintentionally sending the message of "Oh, it doesn't matter if you don't wear a mask even if you're crowded by people and screaming!"

I know that's not his intent, but the optics matter, and that optic, of having this celebrity in a video that's very beloved and shared screaming while not wearing a mask in the middle of a pandemic, it's, well... it's all that a conservative could dream off to justify not enforcing any social distancing or mask rules or not wearing a mask at all.

In a way, these protests are everything a conservative could've wanted to justify taking the virus more lightly.

I worry they also play into Trump’s dictatorial fantasies of declaring martial law to “quell the unrest”.

I feel that if right wingers instead of going by the "looting" thing, they'd have gone for the "Wait, we need to establish these curfews because they aren't following social distancing guidelines", they'd probably have a lot more support and even a lot of leftists would look and that and say "Yeah maybe you have a point" and they'd have figured out ways to protest in a way that doesn't spread COVID19 and those protestors that don't wear masks would've been criticized a bit more by people on their own side.

But of course right wingers would never do that because they didn't even want to admit the virus was a problem in the first place, and they don't want unity, they just want to divide people as much as possible. In fact, if I want to go a little bit more conspiratorial, I'd say they probably WANT these protests to happen in a crowded way so now they can use it against leftists. And leftists are playing right into their hands

So now we're all ****ed.

Does seem the last two months of lockdown might have been a waste. I hope not.

We're probably going to see a huge spike in infected now.

Unfortunately. I can’t even imagine how high the spike will be. The tag team of the political unrest/social inequality and this virus will be VERY catastrophic to us.

Well next time we should tell the experts to factor in the build up of decades of police abuse of non-whites into their policy recommendations. Surely an outbreak of coast to to coast protests and rioting was far more predictable than a new virus?
:o

I'm holding my breath and just hoping against hope that somehow this doesn't get massively screwed up.

the Richmond man found eating his dead grandmother has been charged with her murder
Okay, WTF? Does the virus cause cannabilism now?

Yeeeaah so you need to be from the same area or country to care about a social cause?
Is that really what you're saying? That's the point you want to make? Because I'm in the US, I can't care about something happening in China, The Congo, etc.
And it's a cause that happens around regardless of the country. Saying it's "for a man in Minneapolis" shows you reeeeally don't understand what the protests are about. That man in Minneapolis may have been the catalyst but that's not the full reason for the continued protests at all.
You're just making wrong assumptions and complaining because idk

And it seems like your putting a lot of blame on the protesters like there aren't tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousand of people going out to bars, going to restaurants, going on vacation by plane/train, ready to go to movie theaters all without masks like that's not also a big, if not a majority of what would cause the rises. Because even in countries where there aren't widespread protests, it seems like cases are rising. SO maybe, just maybe, all or even most of the people who are breaking social distancing “fOr JuStIcE” like you keep trying to point out shouldn't shoulder most of the blame

In other news, my area is entering phase 2 of reopening. Phase 1 rules were loose enough.
THis was Phase 1

Sadly the bar wasn't techincally in the wrong. They were adhering to the rules of my area. And even walking around yesterday I saw a similar scene at most restaurants
