Could a GL movie have been made back in the days of pre-CG?

It's not so much the making of the constructs, because it could have been done like Slimer. But it's how the constructs interact with the environment that would be a bit iffy. It would look like the old stop motion creatures interacting with people in old movies.

sure if the film happened in 80s probably wouldnt have looked good for ring contructs but still the film probably could have turned out well.

Could you have done a GL film 15-20 years ago? Sure. Would you be able to make it as visually epic as today? Hell no. Now is the absolute right time for GL, the CGI is at the level is needs to be to do the GL universe justice.

Sure a GL movie could have been made pre-CG, it wouldn't have looked as good as it most likely will with today's CG. However, there is still a lot of crappy CG out there, I'm sure/hope WB is making sure that they get the best CG houses available to help. However, there's another factor to consider, would we really have wanted a Green Lantern movie before storywise, say just before CG became dominant, when it mostly likely would have been Kyle Raynor in the title role, not Hal. Personally I'm really glad they're making this movie during the Geoff Johns era of the comics, as I'm really hopeful to get some of the other Lantern Corps, something we definitely wouldn't have gotten in the back in the '80s outside of Sinestro and Carols Ferris' Star Sapphire.

If they did a Green Lantern from the mid 90's or earlier it would be camp. There's no other way they'd get away with how ridiculous the constructs and stuff would look with pre-CG animation. It would be very goofy looking with 2D animation and no-one would take it seriously, so they probably wouldn't even try and just embrace the cheesiness of it all. I think now is the perfect time to make a Green Lantern movie that takes the character seriously, because before CG it was not possible.

This was just something I was discussing with some geeks on IMDB . Someone mentioned that they could have easily done this flick in the 80s with the f/x they had, and used movies like Ghostbusters as examples. But I was like, even detractors of CGI in film have to admit that this movie would be nigh impossible to pull off without the current technology, especially if they didn't want to cheap out on the constructs.

I think a large number of comic book characters would have been impossible to pull off pre-CGI without looking cheesy as hell; GL is definitely among them.

It would not of had to been cheesy. A combination of cartoon animation and stop-motion, Harryhausen meets Disney........it would of been EPIC!

That would have been awful. I don't think any GL fan wants that.
