I have had an idea for years, and that is to make my own superhero.
I can't reveal too much about the powers and stuff, but he should have several. All of them combined makes him quite powerful but each ability of its own is not as interesting.
He lives on another planet similar to Tellus, with countries much like our own (different races, different cultures, different climate etc)

The modern day is a brighter cyberpunk society, not the stereotypical dark one we for the most see in sci fi films. Science is being praised there. But the idea of a creator is not left behind. The people are very human-like
In the planet's history, I have switched things. The medieval-esque times comes first, followed by the ancient empires (think Egypt, Rome etc). But here, the different stages of history have other names than we have.

The hero is an older teenage boy in a wealthy family, and his country is a kingdom of many islands.

You are free to comment on this if you like. I have also a question. How much inspiration can I get from DC superheroes and from Masters of the Universe without ending up with rip-offs? I know there are theories that George Lucas used a combination of LOTR and Flash Gordon for his Star Wars.

I really really hope nobody wants to steal my idea. :csad:

Sounds cool, doesn't sound like a superhero concept, per se. Sounds more like a Sci-Fi concept. Usually with a 'superhero' they're from our Earth and something extraordinary happens to them. I don't think anyone wants to steal your idea. Everyone interested in writing comics is like you, with their own ideas and such.

Speaking of which, you can pull from existing properties to your hearts content as long as you don't use things that are exclusive to that setting, like names or Grayskull or Kryptonite or whatever.

There are extraordinary things happening to the main character. He will be above everyone else. Atleast to begin with.
I have planned to expand this "universe" with other superpowered beings later on. Most of them will have silly names that pokes fun of the comic book genre. I go the parody route with this. REAL parody that is. Characters should not be aware of the how silly everything is, how campy or cheesy they are. No, the story takes itself seriously.

And there will be several twists along the way.

If you feel free to pull inspiration from DC and Masters of the universe then you shouldn't fear others copying your material, remember we are 7 billion potential creators with a history of 40000 years + of creation. There is no "original", they're all built as patch works of other stuff, what we call muses or inspiration.

You want to make it BIG, don't. If you can't enjoy it for the doing, might as well do something else, it's very demanding and often ungrateful medium. But if you still want to tell your story, build your universe, when your head can't stop thinking about it... then:

Stay authentic: cherry pick what YOU find best. Don't just choose the characters you like, find what you like about them, both visually and character behavior, motivations, etc. If you're going to copy batman, then let it be your vision of him, not Nolans, not Millers, yours.

As far as it being sci-fi or superheroes... irrelevant. Don't limit yourself, Vampire Hunter D is a post apocalyptic Sci-fi-horror-western and more.
