Indie actress, 40, found dead in New York
POSTED: 11:05 a.m. EST, November 3, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Adrienne Shelly, an actress best known for her roles in the Hal Hartley films "Trust" and "The Unbelievable Truth," was found dead in her office by her husband, her agent said Thursday.

Shelly was found about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Police said Thursday night that they are awaiting autopsy results before deciding whether to investigate the case as foul play.

An autopsy was performed Thursday, but the medical examiner's office did not have a cause of death.

Shelly, who was 40, appeared as Jerry in the 2005 film "Factotum" with Matt Dillon. She starred as Audry Hugo in the 1989 film "The Unbelievable Truth" and as Maria Coughlin in the 1990 film "Trust." She worked steadily during her career in film, theater and television but later turned to writing and directing, making her directorial debut with "Sudden Manhattan" in 1996.

Shelly was married to Andy Ostroy and had a 3-year-old named Sophie, according to her agent of about a decade, Rachel Sheedy. Ostroy is not in the movie business.

Born Adrienne Levine in Queens and raised on Long Island, Shelly lived in lower Manhattan with her family and had been focusing more lately on writing, directing and caring for her daughter, Sheedy said.

Shelly recently wrote and directed a film called "Waitress," which starred Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion.

"She was so psyched about the film," Sheedy said. "She gathered an amazing cast, and she was really happy and excited to hear back from Sundance about it."

Enjoy life follks. You ticket can be punched at anytime.:csad:

Don't know her.

R.I.P. whoever you are--uh, were. :csad:

WHAT KILLED HER?!?:cmad:
I'm 35 and want to know what causes 40 year olds to be "found dead". :cmad:

p.s., I googled her and she looks weird, like a one third part fish, 2 thirds human style android.

Sad news. Never saw her act I don't think, but very sad news. :csad: R.I.P.

If I was her ghost I'd be pretty crestfallen to see this lack of grief. :(

guys,

she hung herself (no joke).

:(

Well then, Her Body, Her Choice.

Her husband must feel like s*** to know that his love couldn't cheer her up.
But who knows? Maybe he made her life hell and was the impetus. *shrug*

I just found this article. This is so sad :(

Construction worker confessed to killing actress, police claim
07/11/2006 5:29:47 PM

A 19-year-old construction worker was jailed on Tuesday after police claimed he confessed to the slaying of actress Adrienne Shelly.

CBC Arts

Diego Pillco implicated himself in written and videotaped statements, assistant district attorney Marit Delozier claimed Tuesday at Pillco's arraignment in state Supreme Court.

Pillco was ordered held without bail until a hearing Thursday.

"He said he fought with the victim, tied a sheet around her neck, and dragged her to the bathroom and hung her from the shower rod," Delozier alleged at the brief hearing. "This is an exceptionally egregious case."

The 40-year-old actress was discovered in the bathroom of her Greenwich Village apartment by her husband, Andy Ostroy, on Nov. 1.

Shelly was renovating the apartment for use as an office. Pillco, one of the workers, was one of the last people seen going into the apartment, police claim.

Shelly first gained attention for her lead roles in two of independent director Hal Hartley's quirky films, Trust and The Unbelievable Truth.

In addition to other independent films such as Sleep With Me and Grind, she appeared in episodes of television series such as Law and Order, Oz and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Her most recent onscreen appearance came in 2005's Factotum, a film based on a Charles Bukowski novel starring Matt Dillon. After that, she directed the yet-to-be-released Waitress, starring Keri Russell.

While some New York media outlets initially reported her death was a suicide, police had said no suicide note was found at the scene.

Ostroy, who said last week his wife wouldn't have taken her own life because of their three-year-old daughter, released a statement Monday thanking the police.

"My wife's senseless death is devastating to me, our families and friends," he said. "We are incredibly grateful to the New York City Police Department for their dedication, professionalism and tenacity in following up on every lead in this case."

About 750 people attended a memorial service for the actress in New York on Sunday.

Yeah, the reason people take note is that celebrities are people with which lots of people have a common experience.

For instance, this weird guy in our apartment complex tried to kill himself.
I wouldn't make a thread about it, 'cause no one here would have any idea who I was talking about, but everyone in the building definitely talked about it.

So if you admire the work of an artist, and they were famous, you might be sad to see them go, mention it, and many other people will also be admirers of their work and feel the same...or they'll despise the artist and rejoice, such as I did when Jerry Garcia died.

Can you understand that?

i'll have to check out those hal hartley movies now. i hope they bring that guy to justice.

I was listening to a Radio Show yesterday that stated her murderer was an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, who was afraid of getting deported and that was his motive for killing her.

When the motive is that senseless I'd rather not hear it, like the Indian Sikh who got killed right after 9/11 'cause he was wearing a turban.

Right, because FM is reliable for news.

apparently he hit her, thought she was dead, and tried to make it look like she hung herself in the shower. She actually died from the hanging:huh: .

i just watched her last film, "factotum", the other night. she didn't really have any lines in it, but it was sad to see her. it's a decent movie, but i preferred "barfly" much more, as far as bukowski movies go. matt dillon isn't ugly enough to pull off henry chinaski/charles bukowski.
