Paramount has released a new trailer for Edward Zwick’s Defiance, the upcoming Daniel Craig WWII film. The film ahs already been getting early award buzz, and the trailer looks powerful (...) Official Plot Synopsis: Based on an extraordinary true story, DEFIANCE is an epic tale of family, honor, vengeance and salvation in World War II. The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell star as brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential – a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.

Saw the trailer for this the other day before Appaloosa. Looks great.
I guess I will be seeing 2 Daniel Craig movies this fall.

Just saw the trailer for this, looks absolutely superb, I loved Last Samurai as well, so this seems like another story I will thoroughly enjoy. Anyone know the release date in the UK, as I am definately seeing this.

EDIT: Doesnt matter, Empireonline.com says December 12 for the release date.

^Agreed, thought the trailer looked superb, REALLY looking forward to this now.

New trailer looks really cool. Wonder if this will get any oscar love...Craig looks like he could scoop a nomination up.

UPDATE: The Soloist has officially been moved to March 13, 2009 and Defiance has been moved from December 12 to December 31 with a wide release on January 16, 2009.
Today Tom O'Neil at the LA Times announced the New York Film Critics Circle will vote for their awards on Dec. 10 and the National Board of Review is planning on voting on December 2. How can this happen with so many films yet to screen? Well, with buzz spreading that the Weinstein Co. will delay The Road until 2009 and now Nikki Finke claiming big Paramount and little Paramount are delaying The Soloist and Defiance until 2009 perhaps there won't be too many Oscar style flicks left to screen.

Finke reports the news today, but admits she was unable to confirm with Paramount as to whether the moves are assured. However, Paramount Vantage still has Defiance listed on their For Your Consideration site and the official website for The Soloist still has it listed for November 21. Of course this could change in an instant, but that's where we stand.

Finke approached one unnamed source with the question as to whether this was to help bolster the chances of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Revolutionary Road and was told, "It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the metrics of managing its numbers."

The news of the shifts was apparently mentioned in an in-house Paramount memo. I am sure we will know for sure quite soon.

Trailer looks good and I am fascinated by the story. Definetly looking forward to it.

I don't see why it has been delayed from the 12th to the 31st. Is that enough time to 'finish it' if it's not done?

Cant wait for this, as soon as I saw the trailer it had me hooked, really good story by the looks of things, and not a bad cast to boot. Big fan of Ed Zwick's Last Samurai as well.

I saw this yesterday, It is not amongst Zwick's best work but it is a decent film. The tale of the 3 brothers is an interesting one and the harshness they lived through as well as their heroics are worthy of the big screen treatment.

The 3 leads (Craig, Schrieber and Bell) are all excellent, Craig in particular as the stoic but compassionate leader brings a lot of presence and steel but also balances it with a warmth.

The movies problems lie in Zwick mixing the harsh realities with some romanticism, such as Craig giving speeches while striding about on a white horse that seems out of place, and the fact most of the women look malnourished and kinda unclean, while the one that falls for Craig remains extremely styled and attractive. Also there is so much story that arcs often feel underdeveloped or rushed.

However it is not without it's merits, the overall story is compelling, Zwick handles a lot of the dramatic scenes between the 3 brothers with a salty touch and the film is shot in a stark and believable fashion, he also executes the set pieces well despite clearly not having anywhere near the budget he had for his prior two movies.

Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who like war movies, however I can't ignore the faults it has.

7.8/10

I heard it's getting good reviews, can't wait to see it.
