Days Gone

I dont think critics would have been kinder.
Outside of a neat looking world, the horde and a few parts of the story...i dont think the game has a lot to offer.

The World is pretty empty and doesnt give you anything worth exploring, the game can sometimes glitch like hell and i had quite often framerate issues.
The Gameplay doesnt invent the wheel new.

Yeah towards the end the game gets better, but it still imo didnt offer all that much...i think a 71 metascore is fine for the game.
That's basically what I thought, although I'd rank it between a 75-80 in terms of scoring. All of that is fine for a game but not for a game that takes over 30 hours to complete just the main story missions alone.

I think the reviews would have been kinder if the critics had finished the game. Most of them didn't finish it and it shows. It takes a long time to complete and the beginning of the game is especially a chore but the best stuff (meaning most of the horde action) happens near the end of the game. I'm not going to pretend that its story or gameplay is as good as The Last of Us, but it's still worth a playthrough. Especially since it can be played for free on PS5.
Maybe they had trouble finishing it, because it shipped as such a buggy mess? The condition of the game now, is very different from it's launch. Even those that liked the game had to mention how bad the bugs were.

Days Gone Director Says If You Love a Game, Buy It at Full Price - IGN

“I’m just saying, you don’t, but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch,” Garvin replied. “It’s like, God of War got whatever number millions of sales at launch and, you know, Days Gone didn’t. [I’m] just speaking for me personally as a developer, I don’t work for Sony, I don’t know what the numbers are."

Comparing that game to God of War is my kind of hubris. :D

Oh wow, I had no idea. I do remember seeing a few bugs here and there, but nothing game-breaking.
I think it flying under the radar for so long is exactly why a lot of people don't know that. So many are coming to this game years later and having a good enough time with it, which is great.

Maybe the same thing might happen with Cyberpunk once the bugs and glitches have been ironed out and it's available on the next gen consoles, although that mess of a launch was a lot more highly publicized and well-known than Days Gone was.

Cyberpunk probably will end up in a far better state and get genuine love. But I do think it's launch being one of the biggest in history, means it is marked as "that glitchy game" for life. So few played Days Gone when it came out. Not so much for Cyberpunk, which has legit become a meme.

It'll always have that on its record, but if they can fix those glitches and get the game in a better state out this year while all the other major releases are being delayed to 2022, it could be a big win for them.

Days Gone 2 Fate Apparently Hinged on Metacritic Score

I didn't realize Sony eXecutives really pay attention to the Metacritic rating and can really make or break a game's potential for a sequel.
I didn't either, but it makes sense when you think about it. If a game is bad in this day and age, most people don't touch it. They aren't a critic-proof blockbuster franchise like Fast & the Furious. Since publishers and developers spend more money, time and effort on these games than ever before I can see why they wouldn't want to take a risk on a sequel that may not do well. The only recent game that got bad reviews on launch but still sold well that I can recall is maybe Battlefront II, but even then there were many improvements made since launch.

Didn't Days Gone sell very well despite the reviews? Iirc Sony was making a big deal out of the sales and it was their most selling game in 2019 if I'm not mistaken. Its definitely no Order 1886. I think with other publishers this would have gotten a sequel right away.

I saw it was this month's PS Plus free game never played it so I downloaded it like it so far but I am only VERY early into it

Its long. I think I had 80 hours in the main plotline. Its the rare case when I thought I was in the final act and then an entire new section of map opened, a new villain was introduced, and a plot line that could have been Days Gone 2 started up.

I enjoyed it tho, and really got invested in the main characters and the world.

I dont know if i put so much hours into the game, but it was definitly longer than i expected.
If there would have been more stuff to do outside of the story, i probably would have played it for twice as long.
But i was just mainly doing story and trying to "level up" my Bike...and it was still surprisingly long.

I'm 1/4 done with the main story. I don't really have the energy to burn hundreds of nests/raid enemy camps/activate towers. But damn, I thought I was halfway done with the main story but I looked up a walkthrough in YouTube and I'm only in the early parts of the game despite discovering three hubs already. I like the characters but this is quite tedious.

I hate how the bike literally loses fuel and needs to be maintained. I've read that even if you use fast travel, the bike will still lose fuel. It kinda reminds how tedious RDR2 was and the melee weapons in Days Gone literally break apart after a dozen hits. And the ambushes are definitely annoying and the wolves are such trolls.

I looked this up again and according to NPD, it was the19th highest selling game of 2019 in the States.

So I don't think commercial success was a factor.

Just finished this. I waited for two hours to download the 38GB update. I don't know why it was so big.

Criticisms:
Graphics wise, I thought it could have looked better better. I think I expected more its a big Sony eXclusive. However as I progressed more into the game, the graphics are fine, the scenery looks good and this looks better than most of the games out there. It just lacked that wow factor for me.

I don't like the 1 font they used for everything. I have that font in my computer. It is just not a good choice for a zombie game. The controls can be confusing especially when crafting stuffs and opening the menu. I always accidentally swiped the touchpad so the menu always suddenly popped up, they could have changed that. I get tired when collecting resources again and again. This game made me feel that again.

I knew this game is long. So I just ignored the side quests and focused on the main story, as I really don't want to check every single thing in a zombie game. The game is exhausting. Making sure the motorcycle doesn't run out of gas and keeping its health are just not enjoyable. Deke doesn't regenerate his health. I always have collect to resources and I always run out of resources/money even in easy mode. The melee weapons have a health bar. I didn't activate many fast travels, so I always have to go to point a to point b for like 2 to 4 minutes. There were sometimes random encounters with the enemies in the road that were really annoying. The human enemies and animals can make things harder because they randomly show even in story missions, and they just added up to the task. For example, three wolves showed up when I was clearing those nests (it was a required story mission) and I couldn't simply outrun them. Snipers and traps are also randomly placed. Then looking at the collectibles and things to unlock, there are just so much. I don't know why I need higher a trust level just change to stickers/paint for the motorcycle. The game is bloated and have a lot of requirements. I feel like they wanted the players to feel the dread/exhaustion of living in a zombie world. The zombies here are more terrfying at night, so I really sensed the dread when the sun was going down.

Since the motorcycle runs out of gas and fast travel isn't just a simple click, I didn't really free roam/explore. I didn't want to get stuck in the road and experience the dread of walking for minutes and trying to escape from different types of enemies. I feel like a lot of features in the game held me back from enjoying the game. I wish I could also change Deke's outfit.

Compliments:
The skill tree was nice, some were useless for me but the ones I activated were helpful. I like running towards the enemies and chopping them with a machete. I like the characters here. The story isn't great but I was invested so I needed to finish the main story. The blonde girl though was extremely generic and reminded me of Uncharted's Elena. I like the Death Stranding skins especially the one with BB.

The story for me was okay but my problem is I felt like the "military" chapter kinda ruined the story for me. I didn't mind the slow burn. The best section of the game was when Deke and Booze finally settled to a camp. I really liked the two women there and the interaction there. I didn't like that they ended the game with Deke's friends vs the faux military people. I wouldn't mind that military chapter IF they didn't make the leader of that camp as an evil person. I felt like the early human enemies would have better as the end game villains or better yet use those mutated freakers. It was weird that for a game with those zombie like creatures, the final long mission was Deke taking down hundreds of humans. The final mission was so long and I was like where are the freakers? The NERO subplot was also weird. I felt like NERO had an important role in the early parts of the game especially those stealth missions, but the game forgot them, and just tacked in the mutated freaker and the bonus ending in the final hours of the game. I felt like the director just decided to save the rest of NERO's story for the next game. Looking back at the main story, it felt so uneven.

For me, out of the playstation exclusives that I played, this is near at the bottom. There are just so many buts in this game that stopped me from fully enjoying it. It does feel like a Last of Us knock off. I don't know why Sony had to make another zombie game when Last of Us 2 was coming soon at that time. I think Bend Studio is better off doing a game that feels different from PS' current franchises. Days Gone 2 should have been approved but now I played the game, I prefer something different. I think Sony made a wise decision not moving forward with a sequel.

Over all, this isn't the type of game for me, but I liked that I experienced it. I was on the fence getting this but I have to play every Ps4 first party third person game with photo realistic graphics. This is also my first open world zombie game so in a way, its different. Those hordes of zombies are quite hard for me and they are just insane. I feel like the hordes are what separates this game from other zombie games. I didn't do the side stuff as I know they would burn me out. Clearing camps, burning those nests and doing bounties for money/xp points can be really repetitive, and they sound like the usual open world tropes. But the characters carried this game for me. The writing isn't the best but I've seen way worse in videogames, and the characters really hooked me in even though I wasn't satisfied with the ending.

I share the thoughts of some of you. I'm glad I didn't buy it for full price.

This is one of those cases where a game overstays its welcome. Sometimes they just pad the story needlessly by turning side quests into main missions so that I can get unlock an actual story mission, or by sending me on fetch missions over and over and over and over again.

The second act on Iron Mike was the best part, the third was just so annoying. The fetch missions burnt me out quickly and I felt they were prolonging the story just to say that this game is big, but if they cut at least 10 hours of the whole thing, it would have been a much better game.

I used the fast travel everytime I could, I rarely did the side missions, barely explored and it still felt so much bigger than it should have been.

The gameplay is good, riding the bike after some upgrades can be fun and some story missions are great, I'm just not interested on spending so much time in it and exploring a world littered with freakers.

This should have been a 15-20 hour game, not 35-40 hour one.

The one guy you have to rescue (with the infected bear) before the final mission, I thought he was going to join Deke but nope. It was odd that they had that mission when the people in that camp didn't show up to help them in the end.

I think I might have activated three fast travels (I at least finished two Nero camps/burnt a few nests) but I never used it as I wasn't sure how much fuel it was going to take.

I don't know if the critics dread doing everything but personally, the ambushes, wolves/brutes/screamers/hordes popping out randomly stopped me from truly eXploring the entire map. And I dislike that you can't buy molotovs.

I'm not up to date on this at all. Is a sequel not likely anymore?

Pretty sure there won’t be a sequel The Studio is working on another open world game

Yeah they are working on a new IP. Sony killed any chance for a sequel by turning the pitch for Days Gone 2 few years ago. The metacritic rating of Days Gone just wasn't up to Sony's standards.

Anyway, I hope the new IP is much better.

Ok thanks, hope the studio are happy doing a new IP and that it turns out well.

After what happened to Days Gone, the only option for them is a runaway success.

I hope this game is more fun. Days Gone takes time to be appreciated as someone who played it. Its that zombie game you will really feel the dread especially when you are out there in the open world. Its like miX of The Walking Dead and World War Z. Even if you are doing nothing, something will happen out of nowhere.

This game while its story was meh, has something that a lot of games don’t have. It’s fun and easy to play. Can just turn my brain off, explore a little bit, and have fun shooting freakers. Was a very enjoyable experience and I’m sad this won’t get a sequel. This and the Callisto protocol I want more from.
