I do not look at these as true anime's, but there is something about the art I just do not enjoy to the same degree..however, I feel this was a means to create more profit for the company as it lets them re-use the same animation teams, characters etc...I think its a bold movie, but the cost of animation is just getting so expensive, and nobody makes a whole lot of money from these, so I understand the predicament they are in, just wish that the "standard" they chose to go with was of different style.
Young Justice designs and animations were really great. I wish they could use the same in their animated movies. That said, this clip looks really nice.

Young Justice designs and animations were really great. I wish they could use the same in their animated movies. That said, this clip looks really nice.
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths/Doom and Young Justice were all designed by Phil Bourassa. It was a wonderful style... almost an updated and modern approach to Bruce Timm's style (which worked so well for 15 years).
But with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox onwards, he decided to tweak his dedigns into a more disproportionate, gangly and frankly... ugly style.
It's weird, but his latest output has been some of his weakest work.
I can't believe that I'm the first one that's going to be reviewing this here.lol
Based on the issues that I had with "War", along with the things that I've seen other people having complained about the film as well, I think "Throne of Atlantis" is a SUPERIOR IMPROVEMENT over its predecessor.
I mean, it's not by any means perfect, but considering how bad "War" was, the only other way to go was really up and it did. If anything, my biggest issue is that I wish the film would have been longer.
It was a step up from JL:War for sure. Overall I enjoyed it for the most part. Pacing was fairly decent, though the 2nd half of the film seemed to move the story along really quickly which isn't surprising due to the length and it having to serve as a sequel and origin story. The two cameos that we got were nice.
I wish they would give WW a different costume though, this isn't bad, but I prefer her to have the one she has in the current JL comic. Makes her look less athlete and more warrior/hero. I don't mind the SM/WW relationship but boy am I ready to get her out of this fish out of water/strictly warrior mentality. Her and Mera basically seemed like the same person.
And WOW this was a bloody movie! I am surprised WB let them get away with it, especially after the WW movie had to cut out majority of the blood. I guess times have changed because everywhere you looked, someone was getting cut. Not that I minded but I was surprised.
The way they adapted this storyline left some questions that need to be answered though who knows if we will get them.
Is Manta suppose to be an Atalantian in this movie?, and if not, why is some random human so ingrained in their culture?
Is Mera suppose to be from that exiled tribe? How long she been around?
How did the army know who was attacking? And why did Orm go through the trouble of lifting the seas if he never brought them down?
I'm hoping that if Lex is used as one of the major villains for the next film, that this means that we'll get to see Superman take a more prominent role.
It's funny though, because if you look at the credits closely, it actually reveals that you're going to see Lex show up before the after-credits scene appears since it lists Lex and his voice actor in the credits.
In any case, to give a better and more in-depth review of the film:
1. I really...REALLY...LOVED on how they actually gave Superman a good personality in this film. He wasn't the same arrogant jock that was shown in the last film. Heck, it'd be easy to think that the character in "War" was someone else completely if you just gave him a different look and removed the "S" from his chest.lol
One of the things that I loved was how we got at least one scene with him in his "Clark Kent" persona, which although short, gave a lot more depth to the character than what "War" failed to do in its entirety. I was also surprised to see that we go Lois to appear in this, where her appearance isn't simply a cameo role like it was in "War" as well.
John Henry (aka Steel) makes a good cameo though in this film, and I was glad to see that they paid homage to the comics where his first initial encounter with Superman was a result of the latter saving his life.
I'm also glad that they maintained the notion that Superman is still the league's strongest powerhouse.
2. I really enjoyed the evolution of Cyborg's character. It actually made very sense to show that Cyborg was still having trouble adjusting to his new life as a cyborg. I was kind of surprised that they hooked him up with that female scientist that appeared in "War" since I thought she was actually an item with his dad (she looks a lot older than I what I had initially pegged her to be)
3. Aquaman had a decent arc in this film. I think it only suffers from the fact that the film is too short to truly tell it in the best way possible. Plus, he does have a few cheesy one liners.
4. Sam Wither really brought life to the role of Ocean Master. It would have been easy to really pass him as a forgettable character, but Wither's performance really makes him compelling to watch at times. He's truly a underrated actor imho. The surprising thing about Ocean Master was that he probably gives more trouble to the Justice League when they all confront him in a fight than Darkseid did without having to cause the massive amount of destruction that the latter did.
5. The only characters that are left without arcs or interesting developments of their own are essentially Batman, Shazam, Green Lantern, and the Flash.
If anything, the biggest thing that I found odd was how everyone (without a breathing mask) could talk and hear normal underwater. I'm pretty sure that they won't be going that route with the Aquaman film that comes out a few years later. It'd be a logistical nightmare of all sorts to have an live action Atlantis where everything is underwater. It makes more sense for Atlantis to be a dome-city that's underwater, where its interior isn't filled with water itself....similar to the Gungan City from Star Wars: Episode 1
Positives:
+A simple well-paced story that allows Aquaman, Atlantis, and the JL to shine.
+Action was pretty great (A slight step down from the action in 'War' for most of the leaguers, but Mera was just so BA)
+Solid voice-acting (Big improvement over 'War', except maybe for Shazam). Orm was deliciously over-the-top
+Genuinely hilarious one-liners
+Cyborg is awesome. They put him to great use. I really want to see more of this guy's personal life (c'mon Geoff Johns. It's time).
+Clark/Diana/Lois
+John Henry Irons cameo, as random as it was.
Negatives:
-Although the story had me invested, it's just serviceable overall (barely scratches the potential of the source material) and very rushed (Arthur becoming King, Arthur & Mera's romance, etc)
