I thought that version of Frankenstein showed promise, but wasn't fully realized. I think the problem is that the version in the book doesn't translate well to the screen. And the fact that the Universal/Boris Karloff version is more well known.
I thought Kenneth Branagh did a good job with the film as well as his portrayal of the Doctor.
DeNiro was a good monster too, but overall I felt the movie was missing something.
The movie was missing restraint. There are plenty of good ideas in the film, but it has to be one of the most melodramatic films ever, with Branagh hitting an over the top pitch early, and never grounding his performance in anything subtler. It's a film in the Hammer tradition, turned up to 11, when it probably should have been something more grounded and thoughtful.
