The book is like the Holy Grail. No one really knows whats written in it. Some people think it will reveal the location of a paradise; others think that it has instructions to build a super weapon; some people dont really care whats written in it, just that people practically worship it and if they had it theyd be kings. Their every command would be followed if they said it came from the book.

The truth is that the book is blank. Theres not a single word written on any page. Also, Eli doesnt know this since he is forbidden to open it and that only the person he was charged with delivering it to can.

Existentialist poppycock

Saw this today. I enjoyed it. It's a good, not great, film. Denzel has never been more hardcore. Not even in Training Day.

There is a cameo appearance by:

Malcolm McDowell

I saw this today. It was okay.

I want to see this but I'm also hearing nothing but negative reviews. :csad:

yea same here, i wanna watch this tomorrow morning, first show price, but i dont know if thats worth it

I would judge for yourself for Critics can be wrong and some times id rather see a fun film then an oscar winner. For its the fun films that get us through the days when need a good laugh or wow moment

My friend works at the theater I'd be seeing it at, me and him usually have the same opinions on films. He's already seen it. I'll ask him if it was good.

Well friends usually know but also friends can be wrong now and then. I plan too for looks different from the other films like it and its a nice change from Avatar jet lag

I just came back from seeing it, and it was pretty good. It's in the vein of Abrams' Star Trek movie. You have enough action to please any fan looking for some thrills, but it isn't some dumb loud movie that relies on action to cover a shoddy plot. I give it an 8.8. Some may go higher or lower than that, but I think most people would enjoy it if they're into action.

I liked it alot. Solid blend of action and drama. Denzel kicked ass, and Oldman knows how to play a cold-hearted bastard.

I don't want the entire ending or twist regarding the book ruined but I need to ask. Is the main focus on the book(which I think is a bible if I'm not mistaken)a message about returning to how things were in the biblical times or something(in regards to lack of technology and back to basics)? If anyone wants to answer just give me a vague answer if at all possible.

I hear Oldman is a bit over the top in this film. Is it good over the top or bad?

Seeing his past over the top performances(The Professional and The 5th Element)I take it, it was the good kind.

I'll try to keep from giving away too much info. The focus is really around the power of the book. It's influence on people.

i think i might try to check this out this week

So unless the film goes into really fictional territory it's more of an analogy for how people are obsessed and feel that they need religion in this day and age?

In spoilers just answer with a Yes, No or Somewhat. :hehe:

I'd say the good kind myself. Entertaining to watch.

I enjoyed this movie. It's not so much about the Bible as it is the power of religion and faith. Gary Oldman wants to use the passages in the Holy Bible to get people, who haven't ever even heard of it or can't read, to follow him. He bases this plan of action on the history of followers of the Bible. It's actually quite ingenious really. The idea is that the Bible itself can be misinterpreted and manipulated by those who use it for their own objectives. While Denzel, Eli, uses the Bible as a source of inspiration. He draws his path from the Book instead of using it to create his own subjective path.

I actually love the idea that the Bible is a weapon. A way of creating a following that can go either good or bad. It really parallels the best and worst of Christianity.

Denzel = badass and great as always.

Oldman = I will watch anything that man does. I would watch Twilight willingly if he was in it. That man can act. Someone please tell me why he doesn't get nominated for an Oscar every year? Honestly.

Mila Kunas - she had some good moments. She showed some potential range. But the whole "GI Jane" type thing at the end..... meh. Unnecessary.

The big question is......Eli --- Was he, or wasn't he?

Spot on. As for your last question....

Yeah I think he was blind.

If you're interested in seeing the movie, I would advise you not read the spoiler I just posted. It's best that you just see for yourself.

Yes. He had a Kmart ID tag in his bag that said, "Hi. My Name is Eli."
I've heard theories that Eli might not actually be his name. He could have found the bag the same way many people found most of their resources those days, just scavenging. It shows him in the beginning taking shoes from a dead man. I really don't know either way. I kind of like the idea of him just being a regular joe before the war, just some kid who worked at a Kmart, but at the same time I like the idea of him being a nameless wanderer much like "Nobody" in the westerns. In fact, that's the first thing I thought of when Gary Oldman's character asked him who he was and he replied "Nobody.", and that "Eli" was more of a moniker that was given to him, but never responded to. I guess it doesn't really matter much either way, just thought it was something interesting to think about.

Another thing to think about is when did his blindness occur? Pre-war or post. I'm not sure it really gives any clues in the film.
