On the eve of the release of “Ex Machina” filmmaker Alex Garland’s new sci-fi feature “Annihilation,” the writer/director has revealed some new details about the eight-episode event series he recently set up at FX.
Speaking with Collider, Garland confirmed the project will be titled “Devs” with the episodes serving as a self-contained story with an ending that does leave the door open for more if they want to continue. Additionally, the plan is to film later this year which would suggest an early 2019 bow. Explaining the premise (albeit vaguely), Garland says:
“Devs, as in Developers… It’s about a particular aspect of technology at the moment which is to do with very, very big data and very powerful processing power, and what can happen when you put those two things together. It’s set in San Francisco, a sort of tech story.
If they want to carry it on, I guess they could do, it’s a self-contained story though. But there are ways you could carry it on. Provided [we still have the greenlight], hopefully shooting in about six months. I’ve started talking about casting, locations, practical stuff like that.”
The project is currently in pre-production and has been given the green light from the network so it is moving forward.

FX Orders Tech Thriller Pilot ‘Devs’ From Alex Garland & Scott Rudin
FX has given a pilot order to Devs, a drama from Alex Garland, the award-winning writer-director of sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.

In Devs, which will be produced by FX Productions, a young computer engineer, Lily, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend.

Should be all Mr. Robot-y but crazier.

Sonoya Mizuno! :woot: I'm excited to see her working with Garland again in the lead role after two memorable ones.

Nick offerman! Now there’s a name with currency

I saw a commercial during SNL. They moved it to Hulu and it'll premiere in the spring.

Pumped this is moving to Hulu. Now I can actually watch it!

Belated joke regarding Nick Offerman’s look in this show but...

Too many cooks...

I’ve finished the first two episodes. So far so good...

It’s Alex Garland so prepare accordingly.

As intelligent as Garland obviously is, he seems to have a thing for leaning on cliches in parts of his writing, especially with some of the dialogue. There are some sections of the first two episodes that feel really stilted. Also, like Ex Machina (but not so much Annihilation) some of the concepts being introduced feel all too familiar to a sci-fi fan. That said, the second episode definitely hints at some potential for this to bloom into something more its own.

Aesthetically, I continue to dig what Garland and his DP and editor and composers are doing. I might be "easy" for this type of style, but I think it works, even as I wonder if some snappier editing might make some of the dialogue go down better.

Performance wise Grenier and Offerman have been the stand-outs, which I hate to say since they are THE two white dudes of the cast, but it's how I feel at the moment. I am intrigued by Mizuno's character, though, and hope they don't stop adding layers to her as the show goes on.

Also, if you are going to have a song by Low play a key part in one of your episodes, I mean, I'm in.

I've only watched the first episode but as a big fan of Garland's past work I'm very disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting but this definitely wasn't it. The central premise of the show doesn't seem very interesting and the characters so far are unremarkable (Mizuno in particular is lacking any charisma).

Hopefully the following episodes are better but right now this feels like Garland's first big misfire. Maybe long-form storytelling isn't his thing.

The opening of episode 3 is something. Dug that hard.

Show feels like it is starting to come together.

My girlfriend and I were tricked by her scheme... we both yelled at the TV wondering how her friend didn’t see her go to the ledge.

This show is brilliant.

Just watched all 4 eps. Really digging this show.

Show has kind of started to bog down pretty bad. It is really drawn out and the writing/presentation is feeling more and more forced and awkward. Last episode was borderline painful to watch:

Watching it, it feels like MAYBE Garland had a cool idea for a conceptual climax of some sort and then tried to reverse engineer a TV series plot out of it. But we'll see if the climax is even any good.

The writing is straight laborious in this last one. Like, when Offerman and Pill are suddenly doing in-depth descriptions of Lily and Jamie and how much they like them, it feels like Garland telling us, "See, you should view Lily and Jamie the same way my other characters do, even though I for the life of me could not figure out how to write them in a way that would really make you care about them."

If Annihilation had been a hour longer, it might have sucked.

Well...hopefully it sticks the landing somewhat in 7 & 8 because 5 & 6 have been the two weakest episodes so far and kind of grinded things down almost to a halt except with at least one outstanding issue yet to play itself out. The level of exposition - particularly of stuff the audience does know but the two of the other characters don't know - in the last episode has got to break some rules lol
