Director's Challenge (Game of Thrones) Thread

I do like some of Del Toro's stuff and think he's a talented director, but I wouldn't say that any of it is on any of my all time favorites list, whereas Gladiator is one of my all time favorites. Also, I'd recommend people check out Matchstick Men, it's a pretty underrated film and also one of Nic Cage's best IMO.

I'm sure when Del Toro's been doing this for another 20 years, he will have built up plenty of "blah," too. He's already built up some in my book. :oldrazz:

In all seriousness though, the only film Del Toro's done that even comes close to Ridley's highest highs for me is Pan's Labyrinth.

Devil's Backbone is still great, Claire. :cwink:

Don't exaggerate, Francis. Pan's Labyrinth is "great." Ridley's best work is "great." Devil's Backbone is..."darn good, and better than Del Toro's most recent stuff." :oldrazz:

How about recent Ridley? That Mars movie still unseen. His last great flick was with Nic Cage.

My love for Blade Runner would put him over GDT tho.

I said when I voted that Ridley's past his prime. That seems pretty undeniable. But I was assuming we're comparing these directors in their primes, not whatever they're doing right now. And to me, aside from Pan's Labyrinth, the best of GDT can't even compete with the best of Ridley Scott.

Tis' complicated cause I don't want to sound like a film snob. :cwink:

Might as well give this whole thing to Scorsese now. We can all see how it's gonna play out. :oldrazz:

Speilberg beat Scorsese in their match up.

But in this one it's Scorsese.

As fantastic as Alien was, Scorsese is still going strong after 40+ years as a director.
