🇺🇸 Discussion: Military, The Defense Budget, The Pentagon, War

US News
In every democrat or republican debate they do this talking point. Just trying to gain favor with the voters by acting like they will keep us so safe.

Are you pulling our legs?

ISIS is on the rise, and taking over many areas and nations. They already had too many resources.

ISIS is made much more like a huge threat thanks to the media. There are much worse problems than ISIS, with all due respect to the victims and their families who have been slaughtered.

I would say that since MOST of our mundane technological advances have come via the military. I would say it wouldn't hurt to keep funding the military. Plus big military provides a ton of civilian jobs for base support that helps local economies.

Cause the military is the largest provider of jobs especially in the red southern states. Most people who live in the south and midwest live via military.

Almost all the blue states with the exception of California don't have a concentration of military bases. Most of the media is based in New York City which is a liberal are with a vibrant economy not dependent on military.

And it's the south that hates government handouts. lol

That being said I do believe Massachusetts does build boats for the navy

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea

Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports and skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign up for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet

If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new semen fast

This kind of technological progress and job creation really comes down to a matter of pumping in money to solve complex problems. Money is given to research, production and distribution.

The thing is the "problem" in question need not primarily be "How to bomb more people." At one point we committed comparable resources to "How to put a man on the moon." Just as there are thousands of inventions tied to World War 2 many every day objects have their roots in the Space Race.

Other complex problems we could commit ourselves to include "How to fix a crumbling infrastructure" or "How to decrease reliance on fossil fuels."

This is such asinine reasoning, but anything to take a dig against the South (and conservatives), right?

People who serve in the military are paid to provide a service.
People and business entities who build/provide military equipment under contract are paid to provide a good and/or a service.

By your reasoning, the paycheck that is going to be deposited into my account next Friday is a hand-out, despite my showing up at the office and working 80+ hours for the two-week period that I'm getting paid for. :o

You may not approve of how much our government spends on the military, but to refer to it as a hand-out is disrespectful to the men and women in uniform and the thousands of employees (some of which are UNION employees, I might add) who earn that money.

I was wondering where this originated, but don't want to jump the gun either regarding who did what.

Several pounds of C-4 explosives allegedly missing from California Marine base

Not troubling at all.

Didn't the Def. Dept. just do a stand down to shake out the extremists in uniform as well?

It's an easy thing for us to get high-and-mighty about from the outside, clearly they ****ed up very gravely with this. Still, everything's in flux with a blatant threat like that, and we all know if ISIS-K had pulled off an attack around the airport and the admin/forces hadn't tried to pre-empt it everyone would be up-in-arms at them too. The intelligence was obviously wrong, but it's hard for us civvies to know how credible it seemed at the time.

Still, the situation/broader context for it shouldn't have been there for it in the first place given how they handled the withdrawal, guess they've gotta sleep in the bed they've made.
