Discussion: Online Piracy, Net Neutrality, Killswitch, and Other Internet Issues

I see your points, but again I grew up in a pre internet world so it just doesn't seem all that crucial to me

So what exactly is this net neutrality?

It is the notion that all Internet traffic is treated equally by all service providers. There is sort of a gentlemans agreement on this issue that everone who purchases a certain level of service (like say broadband) can connect with another person or party with the same service and share the same level of information. Since there are no restricitons though, an Internet Sevice Provider (ISP) could in theory filther out, slow down, or block all together certain content (like pornography say) unless you pay and extra fee. Looking at history though, this is a case where the free market may curb that. If the demad and competiton offers and alternative that is cheaper or better for the money, then that is where the marketplace will go. Case in point was during the Dot-com boom, certain ISP's tried to charge for e-mail service, while others offered it for free. As it turned out, most ISP's now offer free e-mail. The size/storage space of e-mail was also limited and now we have increased storage space. I don't belive that filthered content will work so long as we have a marketplace with many ISP's. The day that the market shrinks and that there are a hand full of ISP's (say 2 or 3) that is the day we should be worried.

Net Neutrality is an incredibly misleading title. People need to take the time to actually study what's in it and it's outcome. There are many solutions to some of the problems presented, the Net Neutrality bill IS NOT it. Several computer and internet oriented sites have done case studies on it.

This is a case of "intent =/= outcome"

The thing is, I keep hearing "net neutrality" being used to describe the proposed system of paying for faster lanes and blocking undesirable content. Obviously, net neutrality would mean the exact opposite of that.

Then again...the government is adept at passing bills that are nothing like their title suggests.

Well, to be honest I'd rather know the movie I want to buy on DVD is really worth it. I hate to go to the movie theatre, spend $20 to find out the movie that was all hyped up really sucks.

What about television shows that were legitimately recorded, but never available for release on DVD? Is it piracy if you download them? Justice League, Unlimited comes to mind for one. I tried to find a place to buy the complete series online, and had no luck. I downloaded it with no problem, albiet the Cartoon Network logo was on all the episodes. No one made a profit from what I did.

I don't pirate movies and I buy all of my songs off of itunes so I really don't care.

JLU was released on DVD

I think there are some appropriate questions when it comes to downloading. What about a show like The Wonder Years? That's not airing in re-runs and it'll never be released on DVD because of the music rights. Is it still illegal to download episodes of a TV show if you own all the DVD sets?

As for that article, I just roll my eyes at the excessive language they use. If you think download sites are the "worst of the worst" on the internet, you really haven't searched around enough.

When I download music illegally, its often because I'm going to buy it when it comes out, but I'm too tempted by it being available 2 weeks early online. So I give in. But, I always purchase it when it's released.

It's the same with movies. If I see a movie I REALLY like, I generally see it multiple times in theaters, but once it leaves theaters, and a HQ version may be online I'll be tempted to download it before I buy the bluray when it comes out.

Wonder Years is on The Hub, if you have that channel.

So this is a crackdown on the people doing the downloading or the sites that host the illegal stuff?

I know for a fact Hollywood lets people upload all kinds of daytime soaps onto youtube without removal. Hollywood can't do anything about it either. Not like reruns air on tv or online(ok to a degree yes, but General Hospital from 1985? Nope) Not only that, but there's no way a best of or volume sets of daytime soaps are hitting dvd. Just too many eppys.

Hollywood should really just put reruns of day time soaps on iTunes. 0.99 per eppy or say...$9.99 for a season worth(which is bound to be 200+ shows)

I also know of Highlander the series. Very interesting, it's FREE online. There's an official indie tv channel on YouTube that airs the as shown on USA versions of Highlander with breaks on there. It's legal. Hulu also has Highlander up for free to watch. The dvd's are likely out of print and the blu-ray disc are only available online to buy from the production company.

The article is being a bit dramatic about piracy. :o

if a studio or company chooses to release something for free online, that's fine...that's not even an issue here

but just because some choose to do that and some don't, should not give people carte blanche to just DL everything they want

No but if they don't offer it up for sale (like that 80's animated series Galaxy Rangers) I had no choice but to download it. It's for sale, now but for years it wasn't.

of course you did, you can just do without or wait till its available via legit means

I can understand that.

I just can't, ever, agree with those people who consider downloading music or movies on the internet as equal to grabbing some woman's purse and running off with it, or breaking some car window and hotwiring that ****, or robbing a convience store at gunpoint.

Or whatever else those overly dramatic ads before my DVD's tell me.

True. But if I was willing to pay for it and it was not for sale, I could also choose to download it. Kind of puts a hole in your original statement. It's also not stealing, if it was never available for sale.

I definitely agree. In that article, it talks about piracy is this big ultimate evil in the nation, etc. Yes, we all know piracy is bad. But damn, the powers that be are so overdramatic about it.
