Disney remaking 'Pete's Dragon'

This looks boring. I get it's going for a whimsical, family friendly vibe, but looks like a snoozer.

Haha I don't see how people keep making that mistake. They really don't share any similarities outside of the obvious red hair.

And besides, Bryce looks a million times better. ;)

The time is drawing closer & I'm admittedly pumped to see how this one turns out. It looks really good & the early reviews I've seen have been very encouraging.

And it helps that Elliot's design is 1000x better than in the original. :D

Considering the amazing success from Jungle Book, i think Pete's Dragon has a good chance at making bank, but idk, i havent seen the marketing ramp up.

I think with the success of Jungle Book and Stranger Things, the audience will be there. They just need to sell the reviews and ramp up word of mouth that it has those nostalgic 80s Spielberg feelings attached to it (more so, I'd reckon than even BFG did by a lot). I have a feeling this movie and Kubo could rule August with the family crowd before school starts.

If some question "Suicide Squad!" I'd say that will do great as well as long as it's good (and could very well rule the older teens/adult audience demographically throughout the rest of August). But I don't see it being any form of 'family film' competition - it's more likely to take money away from Bourne and Sausage Party among etc. than it is to take away from Pete's Dragon or Kubo (again, they largely seem like different audience demographics primarily - it's about villains and word is it's a lot more serious/darker than the trailers make it out to be).

Here's an interesting article on Pete's Dragon box office earnings: http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhug...-magical-folk-tale-for-all-ages/#b05915a21bd5

Well, the reviews are coming in strong & Disney is virtually unstoppable. This one will find its audiences. I truly believe it'll shock people like the Jungle Book did & be one of the more successful films of the year.

Certainly seems to be lining up that way. :D

Thing is getting insanely good reviews across the board, plus it's apparently set in the 80s. I'm there.

Yeah, I was expecting this to be good but many reviews are helming it as Disney's latest classic. It'll be interesting to see if it can perform above current expectations. I think it can/will.

Really wanna see this. Looks great and I love BDH :hrt:

Except for the fact Alice and The BFG both did bomb this summer.

Your point? Every movie isn't going to be record breaking, and their failure doesn't mean that PD will suffer the same fate. Especially considering the budget is far, far more modest than either of the aforementioned films.

You said Disney was basically unstoppable. He was just pointing out that they had high profile failures this summer like the rest of the studios.

So far this movie has a better critical consensus than the original Disney movie did...Nice.

Definitely excited about the live action Disneyverse now

Why exactly is this movie set in the 80s?

It seemed even earlier to me. Could've been 60s or 70s. I thought this aspect wasn't so bad. They probably didn't want to date it with a lot of modern technology and references. It does succeed in making the movie a bit more timeless.

I wasn't necessarily saying Disney is unstoppable, just that their success this year could bode well for PD. I'm not saying it's a lock that it could top the box office, but given such an unpredictable year, anything is possible.

Just keeping an open mind, I suppose.

This is getting good reviews. Anybody watch yet?

I did see it Friday, it's pretty good. You can tell it was directed by an indie guy definitely. And I suspect it was actually the 70s not the 80s with the record players and music being played.

Nice glad you enjoyed it. I'm not going to be able to see it till next weekend but I'm glad people are liking it.

Bryce and the director confirmed in interviews it's set in the '80's.

With that said, I came out of this film feeling like my child self. That is to say I feel like this movie hit all the right notes and managed to emulate the vibe of all those classic Disney films I grew up loving.

Very emotional film, beautifully directed and visually stunning. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.
