Disney Announces "Moana," Set For a 2018 Release

In the wake of another successful hit for Disney, it looks like we may be entering another Disney Golden Age after a decade of hit-or-miss films (Atlantis: Hit, Chicken Little: Miss, Meet the Robinsons: Hit, Home on the Range: Miss). In fact, Disney has announced their next major animated film under the Walt Disney Studios name, Moana (Mo-AH-na).

Disney Announces "Moana," Set For a 2018 Release

"The main character will be Moana Waialiki, a sea voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demi-gods and spirits taken from real mythology"
The film, which features CG animation which Bleeding Cool suggests will be evocative of the 2012 short "Paperman," is being directed by John Musker and Ron Clement, best known for Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog. The film will be a "mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific."

Mark Mancina (The Lion King, Tarzan, Brother Bear) will be doing the music.

I am in, especially with the "Paperman" animation.

I didn't realize there wasn't a thread for this. I came across some concept art and things a few weeks back.

And yes I'm very excited to see the techniques developed for paperman being used in a feature.

damn!! 5 years seems like an eternity!! lol

hope we get some good films in the meantime........

and does this mean we're finally going to get some more racial diversity in the Princess lineup?

Tianna, Jasmine, Poccohantas and Mulan don't count? Not that I'm opposed to more of course.

I've been on board with every movie of Disney's latest since The Princess and the Frog. Since then, they've been on an amazing hot streak.

Looking forward to hearing more about this.

Heard about this a couple days ago. Looks really nice!

And if what they say about the animation style being very reminiscent of Paperman, and if it becomes successful, then hopefully this leads to other animated films experimenting with this style and other animation styles in general.

Of course there's a possibility that won't happen, but I'm hoping. :yay:

Musker and Clements on board already seals it. Though they're already upwards of like their late 50s, I figured they'd be starting earlier.

more is always better!! :cwink:

I wonder why Princess Kida from Atlantis never got into the lineup.....

I mean....she's a PRINCESS.........she would have brought ethnic diversity.....

oh.......and she's smoking hot, too!! :woot:

Is it because Atlantis wasn't a musical or because it wasn't considered a success??

The movie itself was actually quite good, I thought.

Looks and sounds nice but announcing it five years off seems like jumping the gun too quickly.

wonder if there will be another princess/fairy tale movie in the meantime.

When I saw the first picture I totally got excited thinking it was a Monkey Island movie.

Good question! The princess from The Black Cauldron isn't in the lineup, either. Kida should be though. Maybe she didn't sell enough merchandise.

Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed plans today for Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated comedy-adventure about a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors' quest. In theaters in late 2016, the film is directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin).

"John and I have partnered on so many films - from 'The Little Mermaid' to 'Aladdin' to 'The Princess and the Frog,'" said Clements. "Creating 'Moana' is one of the great thrills of our career. It's a big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania."

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

"Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself," Musker said. "She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences."

Mulan doesn't count because she's NOT a princess (no matter what Disney says). She wasn't born into royalty and didn't marry into it either (she married a military officer).

Pochantas being called a "princess" just shows that Disney didn't do any kind of serious research on how Native American tribal politics worked (hence the complaints from some Native groups about that movie).

I'll give you Tianna and Jasmine.

Anyway I'm looking forward to this. I always like it when Disney steps outside of their traditional comfort zone (European fairy tales) and tries something different. Plus they've been on a bit of a role ever sine Princess and the Frog (Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, and Frozen).

I think that Disney likes to focus on the Princesses from their successful movies. Black Cauldron and Atlantis weren't exactly smash hits. I still think that Nala should be there to (she certainly fits more than Mulan) but apparently only humans need apply.
